About the Farm

Urban gourmet mushroom cultivation. Top products: Gourmet Mushroom Mixes, Lion's Mane, King Trumpet. Mycopolitan Mushrooms is a specialized urban mushroom farm based in Philadelphia that utilizes a subterranean growing environment to leverage the earth's natural thermal mass for efficient climate control. Operating with a commitment to sustainable, high-quality production, the farm produces a wide array of gourmet varieties, including King Trumpet, Black Pearl, Chestnut, Shiitake, Blue Oyster, and Lion's Mane. Unlike many commercial growers who import pre-made substrate blocks, Mycopolitan produces their growing substrate in-house using over 90% organic materials, ensuring full control over the inputs and quality of the mycelium. Their cultivation process is strictly chemical-free, utilizing only water throughout the growth cycle. The business serves the local community through a robust Farm Share (CSA) program, providing subscribers with bi-weekly boxes of fresh, seasonal produce. By focusing on hyperlocal distribution and bypassing industrial supply chains, Mycopolitan delivers significantly higher freshness and variety than standard market offerings. The farm has established itself as a reputable entity in the Philadelphia food scene, receiving recognition from local media outlets and prioritizing direct-to-consumer and likely regional restaurant partnerships. The operation is characterized by its technical expertise, self-sufficiency in substrate production, and dedication to seasonal, sustainable mycological practices.

I have been enjoying Mycopolitan mushrooms for a couple of years now. Their mushrooms are super high quality, and it's fun to cook with a broader variety than is typically available in conventional grocery stores (I get mine from Riverwards Produce!). I surprised my partner and some of our friends with a tour of the farm this weekend, and we had a blast. Brian was so thoughtful, funny, knowledgeable, and kind. He led the best guided tour I've ever attended in Philly. It was the right mix of history, science, and culture - it's really clear that these guys are passionate about what they do. Thank you Mycopolitan for sharing your work with us! Such a treat, I recommend the tour to any fungi nerds and lovers.

We went on a tour for my brother in law's birthday, and it could not have been more fun! We took our kids, and our tour guide was engaging and SO knowledgeable. We all had a great time, and the kids are still talking about getting to pick mushrooms themselves.
