About the Nursery

Native and Edible Nursery. Top products: Native southwestern plants, Domestic edible crops, Medicinal plants, Botanical curiosities. Spadefoot Nursery is a small, owner-operated retail nursery based in Tucson, Arizona, dedicated to place-based horticulture and ecological stewardship. The nursery specializes in growing native plants from the southwestern United States and Mexico, specifically selecting species that support local wildlife and pollinators. Beyond native flora, the nursery cultivates a selection of domestic edible crops and medicinal plants, as well as unique 'botanical curiosities.' A core tenet of their operation is an adherence to pesticide-free growing methods to ensure landscapes remain safe for both wildlife and humans. The business operates a physical retail location on East Broadway Boulevard, where customers can purchase plants and access online ordering for local pickup. While they do not provide installation or consultation services, they prioritize education, offering online courses and extensive online resources to help local gardeners succeed in the unique climate of the Sonoran Desert. Their mission focuses on reconnecting residents with the local landscape and promoting sustainable gardening practices that contribute to ecological health.

This place is so much more than a plant shop! I have always wanted to learn how to garden and plant trees. I just moved back home to the Sonoran desert and it felt like a really intimidating place to be a beginner at these things. I am so happy that I chose to go to Spadefoot!!! The wealth of information that they share online is truly magnificent and the perspective they communicate encourages a sense of purpose and wonder in planting a native garden. My partner and I have planted several things from Spadefoot in the past few weeks. I feel that we were able to make informed choices as beginners about what to plant, where to plant it, and how to care for it thanks to all of the information that they have made available online and their generosity in answering questions at the nursery. It’s also fantastic to be confident that there aren’t any pesticides in the plants we’ve purchased. Bees and animals have started investigating the new plantings immediately! It’s great to know that everything is safe for them. This ecosystem is under so much pressure right now. The knowledge that Spadefoot Nursery shares gives people the ability to make their yard part of the desert again and I really believe that it adds up and it matters. I was already excited to learn about this incredible ecosystem and now I feel like I can actually work towards better supporting and understanding it. What a wonderful thing. I have honestly been moved by the experience of learning about my home in this way. Thanks so much y’all!!!
