Buying Guide for CA Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Species: California native plants are already adapted to local precipitation patterns. They require less supplemental irrigation once established and support local pollinator populations.
  • Assess Plant Health: Inspect the foliage for signs of pests or disease. Roots should be firm and not tightly spiraled inside the container; root-bound plants often struggle to grow once transplanted into local Redding soil.
  • Timing is Everything: Fall is the optimal planting season for trees and shrubs in Redding. Cooler temperatures allow root systems to establish themselves before the intense heat of the following summer.
  • Soil Preparation: Redding soil often requires specific amendments. Test for pH levels and integrate organic matter before planting to ensure drainage and nutrient density, especially when installing trees from nurseries like Nor Cal Trees.
  • Acclimation Benefits: Purchasing from local nurseries ensures that the plants are not shocked by a sudden transition to regional conditions. Plants propagated on-site are generally more resilient to the specific local temperature swings found in the Shasta County area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time of year to plant in Redding?

A: The best time to plant in Redding is during the autumn months, typically October through November. Planting during the fall allows root systems to establish in the cooling soil before the high heat of summer arrives. Spring is also an option, but plants will require significantly more supplemental water to survive their first season.

Q: Why should I choose native plants over non-native varieties?

A: Native plants are evolutionarily adapted to California’s Mediterranean climate. They are naturally more drought-tolerant, meaning they survive better with less water and require fewer chemical fertilizers. By choosing natives, you support regional biodiversity and pollinators that are already dependent on these specific plant species for survival.

Q: What is the difference between a wholesale nursery and a retail garden center?

A: A retail garden center is designed for the public, offering advice, smaller quantities, and landscape supplies. Wholesale nurseries, like Lassen Canyon Nursery, focus on large-scale production for commercial agricultural or landscaping projects, often requiring minimum orders that can number in the thousands, making them less suitable for casual homeowners.

Q: Do I need to amend my soil before planting new stock?

A: Redding soil types can vary significantly, ranging from clay to rocky substrate. It is highly recommended to perform a soil test before planting. Adding organic compost can help with water retention in sandy areas or improve drainage in heavier clay soils, ensuring that the roots of your new nursery plants can properly expand.

Q: How can I tell if a plant is healthy when buying from a nursery?

A: Check for vibrant leaf color, firm stems, and a lack of yellowing or spotting. Gently slide the plant out of its pot to ensure the root ball is not overly congested or 'root-bound,' which can prevent future growth. A healthy plant should show active, clean root tips rather than dark, mushy, or completely dry roots.

Highly professional and dedicated team inculcated in botany structure, properties, and biochemical processes. I discovered Nor Cal Trees during architecture research into Los Angeles' stunning Belgave Place by SAOTA and research and visit at Napa Valley RH Yountville Restaurant where olive trees are focal points. Wheather flanked at entry ways, along a loggia or walkway they beautifully anchor patios, corner areas or center of courtyards with remarkable natural umbrellas of topiary asthetics. Nor Cal Trees grow and transplant other types of landscape trees highlighting your interests of lineage, history, beauty and sophistication into architecture spaces/landscapes. Highly endorse
