I'm told that broadleaf evergreens do not do well in Grand Junction if planted in full-sun. I want a fast-growing evergreen (6-20’ tall) that does well in full-sun.  Any ideas?  Anyone try Praque Viburnum in sunny location?

What you've heard is mostly true--our bright sunshine, dry and clear air, and low humidity will often burn the foliage of broadleaf evergreens; especially during the winter. For what you're looking for we usually use a variety of upright juniper. They're drought tolerant and tough as nails. They may need to be pruned depending on the space constraints you have but they take to regular pruning beautifully.

Question 6

Our lawn has many brown areas and they seem to be increasing in spite of the fact , I have used some Revivve.  When does a person need to thatch or dethatch (which ever is right)? It is a huge job to do yourself and very expensive to hire it done.

Good Morning Lynne.

There are several possibilities out there. We've had a lot of folks in with issues similar to yours but I'll need you to bring a sample of your lawn out for us to look at. We need a square of lawn 12" on a side. Take the sample from the edge of one of the brown spots so the sample is half brown and half green. Also, don't scalp the lawn off at ground level; bring in some of the soil for us to look at as well. We'll give you the sample back so you can plug it back in!

Do you have tomatoes  and bell peppers  still or is it to late to plant

Hi Tammie.

Afraid we're out of them. It's not too late to plant if you can find some but I'd stick with early tomato varieties like Early Girl and Champion. They'll produce fruit in about 60 days which puts us into the latter part of September. Peppers are usually a bit faster, depending on the variety.

how often should I water my tomato plants

Hi Judy.

That's a tough one to answer because there are a lot of factors that go into determining what your watering schedule should be. The best way to figure it out is to do a little poking and digging in the soil. First, you want to be sure that you soak the plant deeply and thoroughly when you do water. I like to see water penetration down 8" to 12" for sure.

The next thing to figure out is how often to water it. I like to dig down 2" or 3" to check soil moisture. There should be some moisture at that depth--it not, you're not watering often enough--but there should also be some significant dryness. I've found that most everyone has a good innate sense of when to water. Let the soil get to the texture of pie dough when you're rolling it out. Once you've done that a couple of times, you'll have your schedule.

Good Morning. I'm afraid we don't. They're very difficult to grow here in Western Colorado. Most all carnivorous plants are native to moist, swampy areas and our hot temperatures and low humidity make it tough on them. Sorry we can't help you!

Hi Beverly. I'm not aware of anything that will do that. Woody shrubs have a limited bloom season--anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months. The closest thing to "nonstop bloom" is either a shrub potentilla or a modern hybrid shrub rose. Potentilla's bloom for a month or two in early to mid summer while modern roses have recurrent bloom. That is, they bloom, rest for several weeks and then bloom again (and maybe even a third time). Encouraging recurrent bloom requires that you deadhead the rose by removing any old, spent blooms. Doing this will usually give you at least two bloom periods and sometimes three, depending on the weather. Unfortunately, as you well know, roses are thorny. Another possibility is to consider replacing the roses with a mixed perennial garden. There are no perennials that bloom spring to frost, but with careful selection, you can cover most if not all of the growing season with perennial color.

Now is a good time! Pruning while the tree is dormant lets you see what you're doing ... withou all those pesky leaves in the way. Pruning stimulates growth so doing it now, near the time when the plant is about to wake up anyway, works well. You could view a tree planting guide off our website.
