Buying Guide for FL Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Plants: Choose species acclimated to Florida’s humidity and rainfall patterns. Native plants require fewer pesticides, fertilizers, and supplemental watering once established, reducing your overall maintenance footprint.
  • Check Root Health: Inspect the root ball before buying. If roots are swirling tightly around the container edges, the plant is root-bound. Choose specimens with healthy, white roots that show signs of active growth.
  • Understand Local Soil: Florida soil is often sandy and fast-draining with low nutrient retention. Always incorporate organic compost or high-quality mulch when planting to help your new greenery thrive during the intense summer heat.
  • Seasonal Awareness: Use the Florida planting calendar to avoid heat stress. Fall and spring are the most forgiving seasons for planting new shrubs and trees, as temperatures are moderate enough for root development without excessive leaf-scorching.
  • Local Growers vs. Big Box: Local nurseries source plants that are already hardened off to the regional climate. Unlike big-box store stock often shipped from cooler, northern climates, local inventory faces the Florida sun daily, resulting in a much higher survival rate for your landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time of year to plant in Fort Pierce?

A: The ideal time for planting in Fort Pierce is during the cooler months, specifically from October through March. This window allows root systems to establish themselves before the intense heat and heavy rainfall of the Florida summer arrive. Planting during this period significantly reduces transplant shock and water requirements for new trees and shrubs.

Q: Why should I choose native Florida plants for my landscape?

A: Native plants are naturally adapted to Florida's specific soil conditions and climate patterns. By selecting species evolved for this region, you decrease the need for supplemental irrigation, commercial fertilizers, and toxic pesticides. This creates a sustainable, low-maintenance garden that supports local pollinators and helps maintain the natural ecological balance of the Treasure Coast.

Q: How do I improve sandy soil for my garden?

A: Florida soil is typically sandy, which leads to rapid nutrient leaching and poor moisture retention. You can improve this by incorporating significant amounts of high-quality organic matter like compost, peat, or aged manure. Applying a thick layer of pine bark mulch around your plants also helps retain surface moisture and slowly enriches the soil as the mulch breaks down over time.

Q: What is the difference between a garden center and a wholesale nursery?

A: A garden center is designed for the public, offering a retail environment with landscape advice, fertilizers, and smaller container plants. A wholesale nursery primarily grows plants in large quantities for professional landscapers and contractors. While some wholesale nurseries in Fort Pierce sell to the public, they often lack the retail amenities and design services found at dedicated garden centers.

Q: How can I tell if a plant is healthy before I buy it?

A: Check for vibrant, pest-free foliage and ensure the plant is not root-bound. Look for new, healthy growth at the tips of branches and signs of a robust root system. Avoid plants with yellowing leaves, spots, or visible insects, as these can easily introduce disease into your established garden. Always buy plants that look vigorous and stand upright in their containers.

My husband stopped by on a whim and spotted some beautiful Crepe Myrtle’s. He was able to get assistance with picking them out, having them delivered and installed. The guys that came out to do the install were very pleasant, asked exactly what I wanted and were able to execute the installation flawlessly. They cleaned up after themselves, even scraping the street to get up some dirt that fell during the transport of the trees to our front yard from their truck. Will definitely be adding this nursery to our Rolodex.
