My analysis of the local market reveals 13 distinct nurseries, ranging from large-scale retail garden centers to niche, appointment-only specialty growers. This density provides homeowners access to plants already acclimated to Central Florida’s USDA Hardiness Zone 9b. Local nurseries significantly outperform big-box retailers by offering varieties selected specifically for regional humidity, heat tolerance, and soil conditions, rather than shipping generic stock from across the country.

Buying Guide for FL Gardeners

Gardening in Central Florida requires an understanding of climate-specific challenges. Choosing the right plant is only half the battle; maintaining them in our sandy, nutrient-poor soil is the other. Follow these rules to ensure your investment thrives:

  • Prioritize Native Species: Select plants labeled for Florida-friendly landscaping. Native species are naturally resistant to common pests and require significantly less supplemental water once established.
  • Check Root Health: Inspect the container. If the root mass is circling or tightly bound (root-bound), the plant will struggle to establish in the landscape. Always pull a plant slightly from its pot to view the root color; healthy roots should be firm and white or tan, not slimy or dark.
  • Avoid Seasonal Mistakes: While Florida offers a long growing season, avoid planting heat-sensitive tropicals during the peak of the winter chill or installing heavy root systems during the height of the summer rainy season unless you have a robust irrigation plan.
  • Soil Amendments are Key: Florida soil is often sandy and lacks organic matter. Always mix in compost or specialized garden soil from a local garden center at the time of planting to improve moisture retention.
  • Buy Local, Buy Better: Plants raised in Florida greenhouses or fields are already hardened off to our specific light intensity and humidity levels. Big-box store plants often arrive in forced-growth environments and frequently suffer from transplant shock when moved into the harsh Florida sun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the primary difference between a nursery and a garden center in Oviedo?

A: A nursery typically focuses on the propagation and cultivation of plants, often specializing in specific categories like trees or natives. A garden center acts more like a retail hub, offering a broader range of horticultural goods, including pottery, tools, fertilizers, and a diverse selection of plants for residential customers.

Q: Why is it important to buy plants from nurseries located in Central Florida?

A: Plants grown locally are already acclimated to the specific microclimate, humidity levels, and intense ultraviolet light of Central Florida. This significantly reduces the risk of transplant shock compared to big-box store specimens shipped from different regions, which may have been grown in controlled greenhouse environments and are unaccustomed to outdoor Florida conditions.

Q: When is the best time to plant in the Oviedo area?

A: The ideal planting windows are during the spring (February to April) and fall (October to November). During these periods, the temperature is moderate, which helps root systems establish themselves before the intense heat of the summer or the occasional frost events of the mid-winter months.

Q: Do I need to amend my soil if I am starting a garden in Oviedo?

A: Yes. Most of the soil in the Oviedo region is sandy and lacks sufficient organic matter and nutrients. Before planting, incorporate high-quality compost or organic soil amendments. This improves the cation exchange capacity of your soil, allowing it to hold onto water and nutrients that would otherwise leach away quickly.

Q: Are native plants really better for my home landscape?

A: Native plants are evolutionarily adapted to Florida’s specific climate and rainfall patterns. Once established, they require less supplemental irrigation, fewer chemical fertilizers, and minimal pesticide intervention. They also provide essential habitat for local pollinators, making them a more sustainable and low-maintenance choice for residential gardens.

We recently visited the Lukas Nursery and Butterfly Encounter, and what a treat it was! The plant nursery is huge, with never-ending varieties of plants and flowers. We went specifically to experience the butterfly habitat, and I absolutely loved it! I would've stayed longer had it not been so hot and humid. The cost is only $9 per adult, and they off and annual pass for $25. These are both a steal, especially for the large variety of butterfly species in the habitat. I especially loved the small enclosure which housed all of the Painted Lady butterflies! It was nice to see Giant Tiger Swallowtails, and many Monarchs, including mating pairs. I saw Peacock butterflies, Gulf Fritillaries, and others I had never seen before. The staff was very pleasant and professional, and they took the time to talk with us. The gift shop was also outstanding, providing so many different items for sale. I live out of state, though I look forward to visiting again. Maybe your new building will be constructed by then, which is something to look forward to. Thank you! 🦋

Over the past couple of years I have bought plumerias from Brad and Brian at Brad’s Buds and Blooms in person as a well as online. Don’t hesitate about doing either! You can’t beat going there in person if you have the option to. Getting to see all of the varieties that they have to offer and what is blooming and the symmetry of each plumeria. For those that can’t go in person, I have bought from them online and the quality of the plumerias is the same and they are very well rooted and carefully packaged. Brad and Brian are both very kind and knowledgeable and I will continue doing business with them until they stop selling beautiful plumerias at quality prices! Thank you 🙏🏼

These guys are great! They did some landscaping work for me when they were still located at their old location, near Casselberry, a few years ago. Back then, I did not take their advise to add a sprinkler system. Then along came COVID (and some newborns) and I stopped watering my flower beds. Well, they eventually died. So, I decided to visit Longwood Gardens Nursery again to get some more Landscaping work done, but this time I would add the sprinkler system. Only problem was that they moved. No worries, I found them at their new location and was so happy to find out that they still do such work, residentially. I arranged for them to stop by my house and give me an estimate. We agreed on a landscape refresh (new shrubs, flowers, and mulch) a sprinkler system install and some driveway pavers installed (to widen my driveway). Well, just as before, these guys did an excellent job. Very professional and responsive to my concerns/comments. I would highly recommend Longwood Gardens Nursery to anyone that wants excellent quality products and services at a reasonable price. Thank you, Longwood Gardens Nursery team.... you have a customer for life.
