Buying Guide for FL Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Species: Florida-friendly plants like native perennials and specific palm varieties naturally require less water and fertilizer once established, saving you long-term maintenance costs.
  • Inspect for Health: Check the undersides of leaves for pests and inspect root systems. A root-bound plant in a container often struggles to thrive once transplanted into the ground.
  • Seasonal Awareness: In Florida, the best time to plant is often during the cooler months, allowing roots to establish before the intense stress of the summer heat.
  • Soil Amendments: Many local nurseries offer bulk topsoil and mulch. Improving your native sandy soil with organic matter is the single most effective way to improve plant survival rates.
  • Support Local Growers: Plants grown in local nurseries are already hardened off to Florida's humidity and light levels, unlike some nursery stock transported from northern states that may suffer from shock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the benefit of buying from a local nursery in Spring Hill instead of a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries in Spring Hill prioritize plant stock that is acclimated to Florida's specific Zone 9 climate and soil conditions. Unlike big-box stores that often ship inventory from other states, local growers provide plants that have already adapted to our high humidity and intense sunlight, leading to significantly higher survival rates and less transplant shock.

Q: When is the best time of year to plant new trees and shrubs in Florida?

A: In Florida, the best time to install new landscape material is during the cooler months, typically between October and March. Planting during these months allows the root systems to establish themselves in the soil while the temperatures are moderate, ensuring the plants are better prepared to handle the intense heat and drought conditions that occur in the spring and summer.

Q: What should I look for when buying sod for a Spring Hill property?

A: Look for sod that is freshly harvested and free of visible weeds or pests. A high-quality supplier, such as those listed, will provide information on the soil type the sod was grown in. Ensure you purchase enough to cover your area plus a small buffer, and be prepared to water it consistently for the first few weeks after installation.

Q: Why is it important to use native plants in my garden?

A: Native plants are naturally adapted to Florida's environment, meaning they require less supplemental water, minimal fertilizer, and fewer pesticides. By incorporating native species, you support local pollinators and create a more sustainable garden that fits seamlessly into the local ecosystem, ultimately reducing the time and money required for long-term maintenance.

Q: What is the difference between a general nursery and a specialty supplier like a Bonsai or Palm nursery?

A: A general nursery carries a broad mix of everyday shrubs, flowers, and trees suitable for standard residential landscapes. A specialty nursery focuses on a single category, such as bonsai or cold-hardy palms, offering expert-level knowledge, unique cultivars, and specialized care instructions that general retailers cannot provide. Use specialty nurseries when you have a specific artistic or horticultural goal.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Shoutout to the guys here at Brooksville Palms! I fell in love with mule palms almost 6 years ago when I found them at our local nursery and planted 6 of them in our backyard at our old house. Fast forward to last fall, we learned our favorite nursery was going out of business. Since then, I have not been able to locate mule palms until TODAY! I woke up, and drove down and got so excited when I pulled in and saw everything! Drew helped me pick out the best palms for our backyard and was so helpful. Their pricing - phenomenal. I wish I had my own truck to be able to pick them up - no worries! They’ll deliver it to neighboring counties! I got home around noon and here we are 2 hours later and the palms are already in my backyard! Thank you Stephen for delivering and setting these up in the backyard for me! We will definitely be back for plenty more and will be recommending them to anyone in search of palms! 100/100 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
