Whether you are installing a large-scale hardscape or looking for native Indiana perennials to support local pollinators, the regional supply chain is robust. Buying Guide for IN Gardeners

  • Climate Matching: Indiana winters can be harsh. Prioritize trees and shrubs labeled for zone 5 or 6 to ensure survival through the freeze-thaw cycles of early spring.
  • Native Species: Whenever possible, choose native perennials. Riverview Native Nursery is a key resource for these plants, which require less water and fewer fertilizers than non-native species once established.
  • Check for Health: Before buying, inspect the root system. Avoid plants that are root-bound or show signs of nutrient deficiency like yellowing leaves or spotted foliage.
  • Buying Local vs. Big-Box: Local nurseries like Arbor Farms or Plant Center Inc usually offer better warranties and site-specific advice. Their plants are often acclimated to Fort Wayne’s specific humidity and soil profiles, unlike mass-produced stock transported from distant climates.
  • Soil Amendments: Always check the soil structure in your yard. Clay soil is common in parts of Fort Wayne; bulk amendments like organic compost or mulch from a local nursery will significantly improve drainage and root health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time to plant in Fort Wayne?

A: In Fort Wayne, the optimal planting season begins in mid-to-late May after the risk of the final frost has passed. Autumn is also a critical window; planting trees and shrubs in September and October allows root systems to establish in the cooling soil before the ground freezes in winter.

Q: Why should I choose native plants for my Indiana garden?

A: Native plants, such as those found at Riverview Native Nursery, are perfectly adapted to Indiana’s soil and climate. They require significantly less supplemental water and no chemical pesticides or fertilizers, as they have evolved to coexist with local insects, birds, and weather patterns, ultimately supporting local biodiversity.

Q: How do I know if a plant is hardy for my zone?

A: Fort Wayne is generally categorized within USDA hardiness zones 5b and 6a. When shopping at a garden center, look at the plant tag for the hardiness zone rating. A plant rated for zone 5 will withstand the region's coldest winter temperatures, whereas a zone 7 plant may fail to survive the winter.

Q: What is the difference between a garden center and a nursery?

A: A nursery typically focuses on the cultivation and propagation of plant stock, often selling wholesale or directly to consumers. A garden center, like the full-service options in Fort Wayne, is a retail destination that carries plants along with hardscape materials, fertilizers, tools, and provides expert consultation for landscape design and installation.

Q: Do local nurseries offer design help?

A: Yes, many larger facilities in Fort Wayne like Plant Center Inc and Galbraith's Landscaping provide comprehensive landscape design services. They combine their horticultural expertise with professional labor, helping homeowners plan layouts, select appropriate native or ornamental species, and manage the long-term installation of both plants and hardscape features.

I can't believe how lucky I am to have a shop like this right in my neighborhood. The atmosphere of the shop is warm and inviting, and the owner Jessica is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. I work from home and like to have plants in my office, the issue is, I'm really REALLY not good with plants. At Fuller Plants, I've gotten help picking out what plants would work well in my office, and instructions for caring for them that are clear, basic, and ADHD-friendly. Turns out, I was a plant person all along, I just didn't know it. You should shop here.
