amazing selection of large potted own root roses for an extremely fair price. very healthy. lots of David Austin roses. old garden roses. a rose for everyone! the owner, Raymond, is extremely knowledgeable. gorgeous property to top it off!
Raymond sells organically grown, established roses, including some rare varieties. We bought 3 and all are healthy. You can tell the effort he puts into growing the plants. He taught me to look out for little white dots on the heads of Japanese beetles (known to enjoy roses and other plants), which tells you the beetles have been infected with a parasite, which will kill them naturally and allow for the parasitic offspring to hatch off the beetle, and infect more of them in time.. so you may want to look for that, before killing Japanese beetles.
Absolutely cannot wait to go back. Many varieties and Raymond has fair prices and is knowledgeable.Make sure you are not in a rush to be somewhere and have time to puruse the selection. Left with some beauties 🌹
As a person obsessed with flowers - I'm always on the hunt for small businesses that know what they are doing - and I highly recommend Old Sheep Meadows in Alfred, ME. The gentleman there is a master rosarian - who sold me a Hope For Humanity, a Madame Plantier and a Charlotte by David Austin (roses). The HFH and MP are already in bloom (year one) and the MP has not one, not 3 but 34 buds as we speak... this gentleman clearly knows his craft and knows what blooms well in the 5b climate. Looking forward to what year 2 will bring!
Gorgeous flowers on healthy, hardy, organically-grown own-root plants -- this place is the real deal. Actual growing nurseries are becoming rarer in New England; finding this one felt like finding a treasure. Raymond, the owner, showed me around and gave me a planting/growing guide for the plants I left with. Even though a heavy rain had fallen the night before, and many roses were shattering, plenty more were coming on, and both the in-ground plant and the ones potted for sale were full of blooms. Fragrance was heavenly! And it continued as I drove home with a stunning yellow climber and a Rosa Mundi (first found in the 12th century, it has white striping on dark pink petals and a delicious fragrance). I highly recommend this charming place, and am looking forward to enjoying these plants for years to come. Make the trip -- you'll be glad you did.
