Buying Guide for MI Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Species: Michigan natives are adapted to local soil types and rainfall patterns, often requiring less supplemental watering and fewer chemicals than exotic cultivars.
  • Check Plant Health: Before purchase, inspect leaves for signs of pests or disease. Roots should be firm and white; avoid plants that are severely root-bound in their nursery pots.
  • Understand Hardiness: Michigan gardeners should target Zone 5 and 6 rated plants to ensure long-term survival through deep freezes.
  • Support Local Growers: Plants grown in local greenhouses are already hardened off to the regional environment, reducing the risk of shock when transplanted into your home garden.
  • Seasonal Timing: Respect the local planting calendar. Most perennials should be established in early spring or early autumn to avoid the stress of peak Michigan summer heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I buy plants from a local nursery instead of a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries typically propagate their own stock or source from regional growers. This means plants are acclimated to Michigan's specific climate and soil, leading to higher survival rates. Local staff also provide expert, site-specific advice that high-volume national retailers often lack.

Q: What is the best time to plant perennials in Portage, Michigan?

A: The ideal planting window for perennials in Portage is during the spring after the final frost, typically late May, or in the early fall. Fall planting allows roots to establish in cooling soil before the ground freezes, which helps the plants survive the following summer.

Q: How do I know if a plant is hardy for Michigan winters?

A: Check the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone tag on the plant. Portage generally falls within zones 5b and 6a. A plant rated for zone 5 or lower will survive Michigan winters, while plants rated for higher zones may require special protection or be treated as annuals.

Q: What are the benefits of using native plants in my garden?

A: Native plants are evolutionarily adapted to Michigan's climate, meaning they are more drought-tolerant and resistant to local pests once established. They provide essential food and habitat for local pollinators, including native bees and butterflies, while requiring significantly less maintenance than non-native species.

Q: What should I look for when buying bulk soil or mulch?

A: When purchasing from a landscape supply center, ask about the organic matter content in topsoil and the source of the mulch. Quality mulch should be uniform in texture and free of weed seeds or treated wood debris. Buying in bulk from a local nursery ensures better quality control than bagged goods.

I have found my most favorite greenhouse. Varner's is huge. Large varieties of annuals, perennials, trees and lots more. I had a Varner's worker ask me what I was looking for within 10 minutes of being there. She was fantastic of showing me different varieties of what I was looking for. Prices are very reasonable. I will definitely be returning.
