Local Nursery Scene in Lakeville

Lakeville serves as a strategic hub for horticultural development in Minnesota, supported by a mix of specialized growers and retail-focused garden centers. The area hosts five primary suppliers that cater to a wide spectrum of needs, ranging from wholesale tree production to personalized seasonal greenhouse sales. Gardeners in this region face specific challenges: Minnesota’s climate falls primarily into USDA hardiness zones 3b through 4b, necessitating a focus on cold-hardy species, proper winter dormancy, and seasonal timing. Buyers here benefit significantly from nurseries that grow on-site, as these plants are pre-acclimated to the local soil acidity and the harsh swings between humid summers and sub-zero winters. By sourcing from Lakeville-based growers, homeowners minimize transplant shock and increase the survival rate of perennials and ornamental shrubs compared to big-box store imports.

Deep Dive into Nurseries

Eisele Greenhouse Inc operates as a fifth-generation family business focused on quality. They produce their own inventory on-site, ensuring that annuals, vegetable starts, and hanging baskets are fully adapted to local growing conditions before they reach the consumer.

Terra Garden Center functions as a community-centric retail space. Beyond their diverse stock of succulents and perennials, they offer workshops that provide essential education on plant maintenance and garden design, serving as an accessible resource for all skill levels.

Cross Nurseries Inc represents the backbone of the region’s landscape trade. As a long-standing wholesale grower since 1932, they supply professional-grade trees and shrubs to the broader horticultural industry, prioritizing large-scale plant health and consistent growth metrics.

Revak Nursery focuses on the seasonal market, specifically coniferous tree cultivation. They provide a hands-on experience for families during the winter, specializing in firs, pines, and spruce varieties suitable for the Minnesota landscape.

Excel Gardens LLC provides general nursery stock to the Lakeville area. While their operation is focused on broader plant varieties, their high customer rating suggests a commitment to providing healthy, well-maintained plant material for the local gardening enthusiast.

Buying Guide for MN Gardeners

  • Prioritize Cold Hardiness: Always verify that your plant selection matches USDA zone 4. Native species, such as Purple Coneflower or Prairie Dropseed, typically offer the best drought tolerance and resilience against Minnesota’s extreme winter temperatures.
  • Evaluate Plant Health: Before purchasing, inspect the root system. Avoid plants that are root-bound or show signs of circling. Check foliage for pests or nutrient deficiencies like yellowing, which may indicate poor care during the nursery stage.
  • Support Local Growers: Buying from nurseries that produce their own stock—like Eisele Greenhouse—ensures the plants are already acclimated. These plants are significantly less likely to suffer from climate shock compared to varieties shipped from southern greenhouses.
  • Soil Amendments: Minnesota soils often vary between clay-heavy deposits and sandy loam. Before planting large trees or shrubs, conduct a soil test. Amending with high-quality organic matter helps retain moisture during dry spells and improves drainage during the wet spring season.
  • Timing is Everything: While spring is the most popular time to visit a garden center, fall is often the superior time to plant trees and shrubs in Minnesota. The cooler air temperatures reduce transpiration stress, while the still-warm soil encourages root development before the ground freezes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is it important to buy plants from a local nursery in Lakeville?

A: Buying locally ensures that plants are acclimated to Minnesota's specific hardiness zones. Since local nurseries like Eisele Greenhouse often grow on-site, their stock is already adjusted to local soil conditions and seasonal temperature fluctuations, which drastically improves survival rates compared to plants imported from warmer climates or big-box retail suppliers.

Q: What is the best time of year to plant trees and shrubs in Minnesota?

A: In Minnesota, the best time to plant woody ornamentals is typically early to mid-fall. As air temperatures drop, the plant reduces its top-growth activity, while the soil remains warm enough for the root system to establish itself before the ground freezes. This strategy minimizes transplant shock and gives the plant a head start for the following spring.

Q: What is the difference between a nursery and a garden center?

A: A nursery primarily focuses on the propagation and cultivation of plants, such as trees, shrubs, and perennials. In contrast, a garden center is a retail-focused establishment that sells plants, but also carries a wide range of secondary goods like fertilizers, tools, decorative pottery, soil amendments, and gardening accessories to provide a one-stop-shop experience for consumers.

Q: How should I prepare my soil for planting in Lakeville?

A: Lakeville soil varies, but it often benefits from the addition of organic matter to improve structure. For clay-heavy soils, add compost or peat moss to improve drainage and aeration. For sandy soils, organic material helps with water and nutrient retention. Testing your soil pH before planting is recommended to ensure it suits the specific needs of the perennials or shrubs you intend to grow.

Q: Are native plants better for Minnesota gardens?

A: Yes, native plants are highly recommended because they have evolved to thrive in Minnesota's specific climate and soil conditions. They require less supplemental watering, are generally more pest-resistant, and provide critical habitat for local pollinators. Once established, native perennials are far more drought-tolerant than exotic cultivars, making them a sustainable choice for your home garden.

LOVE the fairy garden selection they have here. There is a large display inside.. with lots of options and ideas. This year got granddaughter a starter kit. And then we went shopping at Terra to choose plants to go with the fair pieces. Got a container and dirt, and went to town! I know she will rearrange the pieces once the plants start growing..and that is the fun in rearranging it! Terra keeps the young at heart in mind with the assortment of fairy plants. Can use so.much of what they offer. We had a delightful time choosing from succulents, herbs, small fairy plants, and adding color and uniqueness. Love their rewards program too. Great place to shop. They have lovely garden options and gorgeous flower pot arrangements along with bushes trees annuals and perennials. It's an enjoyable place to shop... And not so big u get lost in it.

This is our third year coming back with our extended family (three families and toddlers) and as always, the experience was nothing short of magical. The kids loved seeing Santa and Mrs. Claus. We also love the many unique photo opportunities throughout the property and the option to cut our own tree or buy one precut. This year we were lucky enough to speak with Amy, the owners daughter. She was so informative about the differences between the Christmas trees and what would best fit our preferences. We can’t wait to come back again next year!
