Why Buy Locally Grown in MO?

Missouri gardeners face unique challenges, including humid summers and potential winter temperature swings. Plants grown in this region by nurseries like A Waldbart & Sons are acclimated to the USDA Hardiness Zones relevant to the area. Unlike big-box retailers that source inventory from disparate climates, local growers produce specimens that have developed under Missouri's specific weather patterns. This regional acclimation increases transplant success rates, minimizes shock, and reduces the need for heavy supplemental watering or chemical intervention once the plant is established.

Planting Guide & Popular Choices

Success in Florissant requires timing your planting to match the local seasons. Fall remains the ideal time for planting trees and shrubs in Missouri. The cooling soil temperatures allow roots to establish themselves before the winter freeze, while the dormant tops of the plants require less hydration. Spring is also effective, provided planting happens before the arrival of extreme summer heat. For sustainable landscapes, prioritize native trees and drought-tolerant shrubs. Hardwood species and established ornamentals sourced from local producers often exhibit higher survival rates because they are already hardened off to local environmental conditions. Always ensure adequate mulch coverage to retain soil moisture, particularly during the first year after planting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the benefits of buying trees from a local nursery in Florissant?

A: Buying from a local nursery in Florissant ensures that the plants are acclimated to Missouri's specific climate conditions and hardiness zones. Local growers often raise their stock on nearby land for several years, which reduces transplant shock and increases the overall survival rate compared to shipping plants from other states. Furthermore, you gain access to expert advice tailored to local soil quality and regional pests.

Q: When is the best time to plant trees and shrubs in Missouri?

A: The optimal time for planting trees and shrubs in Missouri is typically during the fall. Cool air temperatures paired with warm soil allow root systems to become established before the ground freezes. If you cannot plant in the fall, early spring is the second best option. It is crucial to finish planting early enough to ensure the root system is well-settled before the intense heat and dry spells of the Missouri summer arrive.

Q: Are there specialized tree options available for commercial properties in Florissant?

A: Yes. Certain nurseries, such as A Waldbart & Sons Nursery, offer specialized services for commercial property managers, golf courses, and healthcare facilities. These providers typically focus on high-quality shade, ornamental, and evergreen trees that are professionally cultivated over several years to ensure consistent size, health, and structural integrity. This approach provides a reliable supply for large-scale landscaping projects that require uniform, mature plant specimens.

Q: How do I ensure my new nursery-bought plants survive the local climate?

A: To ensure survival, select plants that are labeled as climate-hardy for your specific Missouri hardiness zone. Once planted, prioritize deep, consistent watering during the first growing season to encourage root growth. Using proper mulch helps maintain soil moisture levels and protects roots from extreme temperature fluctuations. Consult with your local nursery staff for specific guidance on your plant variety, as they understand the local soil composition and regional environmental variables better than anyone else.

This nursery is a North St.Louis County treasure. It's located just north of Marshalls and Ross, past Ollie's but on the same side of Lindbergh. They have been in business close to fifty years and at this location thirty years. Their selection is good ...everything from trees, shrubs, annuals etc. Their plants appear healthy and vary in sizes. The staff is knowledgeable and welcoming. They offer delivery and install (install amount is calculated 3/4 (75%) of your total purchase. They only charge tax on the plant purchases. That's actually a very fair offering in that there service coverage is vast and their prices are fair. Right now they have the most beautiful tree. You can send it to me...when you purchase the plants for your home. Until then enjoy..this a nursery every plant lover should have on his/her list.
