Buying Guide for NJ Gardeners

New Jersey gardening requires careful attention to USDA hardiness zones, which typically range from 6b to 7b in the southern region. Understanding your zone is the first step toward long-term landscape success. Consider these tips for your next nursery visit:

  • Prioritize Native Species: New Jersey native plants are adapted to local soil and rainfall. They require less supplemental water and chemical intervention once established.
  • Check Plant Health: Before purchasing, inspect the root ball. Avoid plants that are root-bound or show signs of disease like yellowing leaves or spotted foliage.
  • Buying Local vs. Big Box: Local nurseries source plants from growers who understand our specific climate. These plants are already acclimated to the local temperature fluctuations, reducing transplant shock compared to those shipped from warmer states.
  • Seasonal Timing: Timing is everything in New Jersey. Aim for fall planting for shrubs and trees to allow root systems to establish before the summer heat. Spring is ideal for annuals and vegetable starts after the last frost date.
  • Soil Prep: Don't ignore soil amendments. Test your pH levels annually and consult local nursery staff about whether your garden needs organic compost or specific drainage materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time to plant perennials in South Jersey?

A: In South Jersey, the ideal time to plant perennials is during the cooler months of spring or fall. Planting in late September to early November allows roots to establish in the warming soil before the winter frost. Alternatively, planting in mid-spring, after the final frost, gives plants the entire growing season to build a robust root system before the summer heat arrives.

Q: Are local nurseries better for native plants than big-box stores?

A: Yes, local garden centers are generally superior for native plants. They typically source inventory from regional growers who focus on species that thrive in the specific soil and climate of New Jersey. Big-box retailers often stock national varieties that are not necessarily adapted to the local ecosystem, which may result in higher water requirements or increased susceptibility to regional pests.

Q: How do I improve the clay-heavy soil common in Gloucester County?

A: Improving clay-heavy soil involves adding organic matter such as compost, leaf mold, or aged manure. Working these amendments into the top six to eight inches of soil helps break up heavy particles, improving drainage and aeration. Many local garden centers in Glassboro offer specialized bulk organic soil blends that are specifically formulated to improve drainage and nutrient retention for residential gardening beds.

Q: What is the difference between a garden center and a wholesale greenhouse?

A: A retail garden center is designed for the public, offering plants, supplies, and expert advice for home gardens. A wholesale greenhouse, like those in the South Jersey region, focuses on the mass production of plant material to supply those retail shops. While some wholesalers offer limited retail hours, they are primarily geared toward industry professionals, brokers, and high-volume commercial buyers who require specific plant genetics.

Q: How often should I test my soil in a South Jersey garden?

A: You should test your garden soil at least once every two to three years. New Jersey soil pH can fluctuate based on local precipitation and the use of fertilizers. Testing helps you determine if you need to add lime to raise pH or sulfur to lower it, ensuring your plants can effectively absorb nutrients. Most local nurseries provide guidance on where to send samples for professional analysis.

Ive been looking for a local nursery with a wide selection of native dog safe flowers for my garden. Ive come arcoss Bloomers on my errands and decided to stop in and to my delight they had beautiful, healthy, and very well organized stock! The staff are very attentive as when i was wondering through different sections 2 indivduals approched asking if i needed help. They then showed me to each section and pointed out plants that best fit what i was looking for. The water garden section was a pleasant bonus! As it is often difficult to find some native aquatics in other nurseries. Some prices may be just a touch higher then larger scale places but I am happy to pay 2-5 dollars more for a plant thats in such great health.

Fresh basil was impossible to find until I discovered their Weezy’s Garden line. They are Genovese and have amazing flavor and aroma. My restaurant has been using LGH for basil since 2025 and I couldn’t be more impressed and pleased with the quality of the basil. The color is a bright deep green and the plants are very healthy after 2 weeks in pots with daily watering. We love you guys!! Dom from Squares & Fare
