What is the shelf life on bulbs sold in the little boxes at grocery stores?  Thsnks

They should be purchased and planted in the season they are being sold. Storing them beyond that time could impact the integrity of the bulb causing it to become nonviable.

What are the round disks for? What do I do with them?

Hi Carter, I believe you are referring to the Cocopeat disks. If that is the case, you will remove the plastic wrapper, place the disk into a large bowl (2 Qt). Add enough water to cover half the height of the disk. Wait about 5 to 15 minutes for the disk to expand. .  If necessary, add another ¼ cup of warm water. Or if there is too much water, drain the excess water. (Then You can break it up more with a fork if needed to separate the soil) Transfer the soil to the pot. Make a small well where the seeds will go. Plant your seeds and cover them with some of the soil. Follow the planting instructions on the kit or plant package.

what fetilizer shall i use for my new planted grape vine

Newly planted grapes don't typically require any fertilizer unless your ground is problematic. Best approach is to apply compost around the plant to help improve your soil each spring.    An all purpose fertilizer can be applied lightly as needed based on soil tests or just if the plants appear to need it, such as leaves looking discolored.

concerning the amaryllis bulb purchased in a container .  the bulb now have two more bullbs attached to the large bulb.  can i break them off and plant them in another pot  as  these two little bulb are at the roots of the big bulb

Question 5

Is it too late to plant "parrot magic" tulips in pots on my balcony in Salt Lake City? We have deer problems so I can't plant in ground, but balcony is higher up. Also, can tulips be "forced" indoors?

Hi Susan, your tulips will look pretty planted in pots safe away from deer. Planting time is before the hard frost sets in. If you'd like to try forcing them indoors, some planning is required. They need to be chilled for 12-16 weeks. One popular method is in the vegetable drawer of your fridge (don't put any other produce in there). Once chilling is complete, you want to plant them in pots letting the tips of the tulip bulb be right at soil level. Store them in a cool dark dry location like an unheated basement or garage and water lightly once a week until you start to see green leaves appear. At that point, you can move them to a room with plenty of indirect sunlight. Flowers should appear within 2-3 weeks.

Bought some lily of the valley pips and they have white tips coming out. Should I plant them with the tip completely below the surface or with the tips sticking out of the dirt?

Hi Emma, you want to plant them with the white tips sticking up just above the soil line.

exactly where does the planting disk go in the pot? top, middle or bottom of pot, when first planting the amaryllis bulb ?

Hi Peggy, you first want to rehydrate your planting disk in a 2 Qt container.  Once it is rehydrated, transfer it to the flower pot and plant your Amaryllis bulb.  1/3 of the Amaryllis should be showing above the soil line with the remaining 2/3 planted in the medium (soil).

Was reading that kiwi plant needs a male and female to produce fruit. Howevet nowhere on your package does it indicate this is a need????

Hi Alma, our Kiwi plants are self-pollinators.  No need for a male or female plant companion.  Once planted, it could take up to 3 years before you see it produce any fruit.

I recently bought bulbs and noticed the "hardiness zone was 8-10. I live in Harrisburg, Pa. What zone am I?  Should I return the bulbs?

Hi Louise, you are between 6b-7b. You will be able to grow what you purchased, but your plant will be treated as an annual instead of a perennial due to the climate.
