About the Nursery

Native plant and garden nursery. Top products: regional native plants, soil amendments, gardening tools. Gowanus Nursery, based in Brooklyn for over 20 years, is a horticultural business specializing in the propagation and sale of regional native plants. With a strong focus on ecological restoration and support for local gardeners, the nursery emphasizes plants grown from local seeds. While the business is transitioning its physical Brooklyn location to a new operation in northwest Connecticut, its core identity remains rooted in providing high-quality native flora, specialized soil amendments, and gardening tools. The business serves local Brooklyn gardeners and environmental enthusiasts, offering expert guidance on seasonal plantings. Their methodology prioritizes the cultivation of native species that thrive in the local ecosystem, ensuring that their offerings are well-suited to the regional climate. As they reformulate their business model, they continue to maintain a commitment to regional horticulture, moving toward an online-ordering and local drop-spot distribution system to keep supporting the gardening community.

I was so sad to see this place gone. One of my favorite spots for sure. I have seen no other place that is so full of hidden corners. It was itself a beautiful garden.

This place is a gem, a place I come back to year after year. The owner has spent literally hours helping me find the right plants for my space - interesting, dynamic, unusual, and complimentary to each other - while encouraging my excitement and curiosity as a novice gardener. 10/10 no notes.

The place looks lovely and the plants seem beautiful, but after a long trek with my dog I was surprised with a “no dogs allowed sign”. Since it’s outdoors, I didn’t anticipate it. I I wish they stated that on their website. I also tried to make contact with whoever was inside, but they wouldn’t even come to the door, so it was a double disappointment for me :(
