Buying Guide for NY Gardeners

  • Check for Acclimation: Buy from nurseries that grow their own stock, like Mandy's Spring or Canopy of Saratoga. Plants raised in New York are already adapted to local soil pH and the region's shorter growing season.
  • Examine Root Systems: When buying perennials or shrubs, gently lift the plant from its pot. A healthy plant has firm, light-colored roots. Avoid specimens where roots are circling tightly, which indicates they have outgrown their containers.
  • Prioritize Native Plants: Species native to the Northeast are naturally more drought-tolerant and pest-resistant. They require less fertilizer and supplemental watering than exotic varieties once established.
  • Timing is Everything: In Queensbury, avoid planting sensitive perennials until the danger of frost has passed in late May. Use early spring for cool-weather vegetables and late autumn for bulb planting.
  • Soil Health: Don't just buy plants; invest in amendments. Many garden centers offer compost or specialized organic fertilizers. Improving your soil structure before planting is the single most effective way to ensure long-term plant health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When is the safest time to start planting in Queensbury?

A: Because Queensbury resides in a cold-climate zone, wait until the final frost passes, typically in late May. Planting too early puts sensitive perennials at risk of damage from unexpected cold snaps. For hardy cool-weather vegetables, you can begin in late April, but always keep row covers on hand in case of a late frost.

Q: What is the primary benefit of choosing a local nursery over a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries like Mandy's Spring or Garden Time grow their stock on-site, meaning the plants are already acclimated to the specific microclimates and soil conditions of Upstate New York. Big-box stores often source from warmer states, resulting in plants that are less hardy and may struggle to survive their first harsh New York winter.

Q: Are native plants actually better for my New York garden?

A: Yes. Native plants, such as those found at The DayDream Farmer, are perfectly adapted to regional rainfall and temperature patterns. Once established, they require less supplemental water, little to no chemical fertilizer, and naturally support local pollinator populations. This makes them both an environmentally responsible and a lower-maintenance choice for your landscape.

Q: How do I know if my soil needs amendments before planting?

A: Soil in the Northeast can vary, but many gardeners deal with heavy clay or acidic soil. Before purchasing expensive amendments, perform a soil test. You can often ask local garden centers like Hewitt's for advice on how to interpret these results. Generally, adding organic compost is a universal way to improve soil structure and drainage regardless of your specific backyard composition.

Q: What is the difference between a nursery and a garden center?

A: A nursery typically focuses on the production and cultivation of plants, often on-site. A garden center is more of a retail hub that stocks these plants alongside garden tools, hardscape supplies, soil, and decorative items. In Queensbury, many businesses like Grasshopper Gardens function as both, providing a complete range of goods and services.

Customer Service and quality product 5 star ! After looking at multiple company’s we bought our shed from Garden time Clifton park. They have tons of designs to see in person on their property. Bryce our sales man was very knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with as well as the guys who did foundation install and delivery guy. These guys are pros at it. We thought we would design and build our shed because we needed it to look a certain way for our HOA. After looking at their many models we decided to go with a shed they had on their lot that we loved and fit all our requirements for our HOA. We are very happy with all phases of the process at Garden time. From the sale price, foundation install to the delivery the whole process was great. The quality of their product is so sturdy and very well built compared to other places we looked at. Highly recommend this company.

I had the opportunity to visit Canopy this past week and I couldn't have enjoyed my experience more. We stopped in to grab a bite, but also to see what Canopy has to offer, and they offer A LOT! My husband & I both ordered a Toastie (Gluten Free) and they came on the most delicious baguette; along with a specialty coffee drink which was equally delicious. The staff was so friendly; we had an opportunity to chat with Polly and she was so sweet, and so helpful as we navigated the store. I ended up creating a 'Pot You're Own Plant' to bring home, and let me just say that I will be back to pot more, and spend more time looking at all that Canopy offers (Our time was somewhat limited so I didn't have as much time as I would have wanted to look at everything). Thank you Canopy, for a great first experience!
