For a special birthday celebration, my friend and I created beautiful terrariums with the guidance of Greg, owner and teacher at Silverton Terrariums. He provided highly interesting history and all kinds of plants and supplies for us each to create a unique and special terrarium. I highly recommend this experience! It was both educational and lots of fun!

I recently attended the terrarium class and truly enjoyed the creative process of putting everything together. The hands-on experience was fun and inspiring, and I appreciated the opportunity to learn something new. One thing I wasn’t aware of beforehand was that, in addition to the $60 class fee, participants needed to purchase a glass container from the store rather than being able to use one of their own. While I understand supporting the shop, it would have been helpful to know in advance that the container and materials would be an additional cost. I ended up spending over $200 (in addition to the 60 class fee) for a fairly simple container and its contents. Overall, I enjoyed making the terrarium and the experience itself and the life time guarantee for the terrarium— I just think clearer communication about total expected costs would help future participants plan accordingly.
Serious props to the Bait-and-Switch MASTER. It;'s a very small space. 11/15 showed up for our class and boy howdy am I glad. There's scarce enough room to turn around. The 'class' is 45 minutes of a very informative talk by the owner whose name is Greg but whose narration style is that of Garrison Keilor. If that's your jam, cool; I went to spend a couple hours with my wife and learn something. What I learned is that the $25 discount for a terrarium for attending the 'class' is ... 1/10th of the cost of the cheapest bit of glassware available. $90 was the cheapest. We were told we'd get a discount due to spending over $200 each... I got it, my spouse did not. So my $115 (2 people class) Xmas gift turned into $600... because the 2 qt Mason jar 'terrarium' was $140. Oh, and $10 for the little plastic dinosaur and frog. On the plus side, my biochem-major spouse, a Physician with 20 years' experience, got to learn how photosynthesis works. Well, 3/21 steps of it anyway. It really seems that the 'class' is a bait-and-switch to get us int he door and then realize the cheapest we're getting out of here for is $150 more. SERIOUSLY a grift of the *best* caliber.
I attended this workshop with my co-workers and I highly recommend it! Gregg is very kind, knowledgeable, and a wonderful storyteller. His presentation is incredibly interesting and the parts of his personal experience that he shares are very endearing. His small studio has a warm and welcoming vibe and the calm and relaxing music he plays quietly in the background makes the experience very enjoyable. Thank you Gregg for a great afternoon!
