Buying Guide for TN Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Species: Native plants like Eastern Redbud or native azaleas require less irrigation once established because they are evolutionary matches for East Tennessee soil and rain patterns.
  • Inspect for Health: Before buying, check for signs of root-binding in pots. Avoid plants with yellowing leaves or obvious pest infestations, as these often fail to thrive after transplanting.
  • Timing is Everything: Planting in Tennessee is most successful during the dormant season (late fall or early spring). This allows root systems to establish before the heat of July and August stress the plant.
  • Understand Local Soil: Much of our regional soil is clay-heavy. Consult with local nursery staff about adding organic amendments or raised-bed techniques to improve drainage for moisture-sensitive ornamentals.
  • Local Acclimation: Buying from nurseries that grow their stock on-site ensures your plants have survived the actual local winter temperatures, unlike shipments from deep southern climates which may not handle local frosts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time of year to plant in Johnson City?

A: The ideal planting windows in East Tennessee are early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked, and mid-to-late fall. Planting in the autumn allows root systems to establish during cooler temperatures, which significantly reduces transplant shock compared to summer installations when heat and drought stress are at their peak.

Q: Why should I choose a local nursery over a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries in the Tri-Cities area typically propagate their stock on-site or source from regional growers. This ensures plants are acclimated to our specific hardiness zones. Big-box stores often stock inventory shipped from different climates, which may struggle when exposed to Tennessee's unique humidity and temperature swings.

Q: How do I know if my soil is suitable for my plants?

A: East Tennessee soil is often high in clay, which retains water but can suffocate roots. Before planting, perform a simple drainage test by digging a hole and filling it with water. If it drains slowly, you should amend your soil with organic compost to improve aeration and moisture management.

Q: What are the benefits of using native plants in my garden?

A: Native plants have evolved to thrive in the Appalachian ecosystem, making them naturally drought-tolerant and resistant to local pests. By choosing species native to our region, you reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers and excessive supplemental watering, creating a lower-maintenance garden that supports local pollinator populations.

Q: How do I care for plants during a typical East Tennessee summer?

A: Summer in Tennessee can be punishing for container-grown plants and newly installed shrubs. Focus on deep, infrequent watering early in the morning rather than frequent, shallow sprays. Apply two to three inches of organic mulch around the base of your plants to keep roots cool and maintain consistent soil moisture.

I just want to thank the staff at Evergreen who helped me with my Jade Tree. I was having issues with it and brought it in to seek some advice. The ladies were very patient with me and even took the time to repot it for me with some fresh potting soil and advice on how to take care of it better. I appreciate the service that you provided me.

We came to buy some evergreens, and the owners were super helpful and knowledgeable. Very low key atmosphere, I was able to walk around and look at everything. We went home with trees and blueberry plants! They even helped load everything into the truck. I’d recommend them to everyone.
