Buying Guide for UT Gardeners

Gardening in Orem requires a solid understanding of Utah’s unique environmental pressures. Local soils are often alkaline and can be heavy in clay, making soil preparation the most important step before any planting occurs. Use the following tips when visiting local nurseries:

  • Prioritize Native Species: Seek out plants that occur naturally in the Intermountain West. These species have evolved to thrive in our specific water cycles, requiring less irrigation and fewer fertilizers once established.
  • Check for Local Acclimation: Plants grown in local nurseries are often better prepared for Utah’s spring frosts than those shipped from out-of-state distributors. Always ask staff if a plant was grown on-site or imported, as locally grown stock is more likely to handle local temperature fluctuations.
  • Inspect Root Health: Before buying, gently slide a plant from its pot. Roots should be firm and white or light-tan. Avoid plants with dark, mushy roots or those that are excessively root-bound, as these will struggle to establish in Orem’s difficult soil.
  • Understand Planting Windows: Utah’s growing season is relatively short. Visit local garden centers in early spring for cool-season crops like kale or lettuce, and wait until after the final frost—typically mid-May in Orem—before planting tomatoes, peppers, and other heat-loving varieties.
  • Maximize Soil Amendments: Always amend your soil with high-quality organic compost before installing new plants. Local nurseries often carry specialized mixes formulated for Utah's specific pH levels, which can significantly improve nutrient uptake for your landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time of year to start planting in Orem, Utah?

A: In Orem, the prime planting season usually kicks off in mid-May once the risk of a hard frost has passed. While cool-season vegetables like peas, lettuce, and spinach can go into the ground in early April, most flowers and heat-loving vegetables require the soil to warm up thoroughly to ensure healthy establishment.

Q: Why should I choose a local nursery over a large national retailer?

A: Local nurseries in Orem stock varieties specifically suited to the high-desert climate and alkaline soil of Utah. Unlike large box stores that often sell inventory sourced from different climate zones, local growers offer plants that are already acclimated to regional weather patterns, which drastically improves survival rates for your garden.

Q: How can I improve Orem's clay-heavy soil for my garden?

A: Orem soil is typically high in clay and alkalinity, which can suffocate roots. To improve this, incorporate generous amounts of organic matter, such as compost or aged manure, into your garden beds. This helps break up the clay structure, improves drainage, and helps lower the soil pH to a range that makes nutrients more accessible to plants.

Q: Are there benefits to buying native plants for my home landscape?

A: Native plants are evolved for Utah’s environment, meaning they are inherently more drought-tolerant and pest-resistant than non-native species. Once established, they require significantly less water and supplemental fertilizer, making them the most sustainable and low-maintenance choice for a Orem landscape, while simultaneously supporting local pollinator populations.

Q: What is the difference between a nursery and a garden center?

A: A nursery primarily focuses on the propagation and growing of plants, often specializing in specific categories like trees, vegetables, or succulents. A garden center, however, acts as a comprehensive retail hub, stocking plants alongside a wide variety of hardscape materials, specialized tools, fertilizers, and decorative items to serve a broader range of gardening needs.

Beautiful store with well curated home decor plants and gifts. Hard to find perennials to buy because they’re all interspersed outside. It’s beautiful but it’s a pain to find what you need.

These guys are great. So friendly and helpful. I got plants from them last year and they did great. I do feel like they use too much nitrogen for the plants to be able to aclimate to natural soils but if you use extractable nutrients instead of living soil, these plant will probably have less down time but maybe not be as established. (The plants just take a long time to release the build up of nitrogen and start getting the nitrogen from the biology in the living soil. But once it aclimates, these plants are wonderful!!! I HIGHLY RECOMEND.(even though currently they are in a moving process and didnt do plants this year.)
