Buying Guide for CA Gardeners

  • Prioritize Natives: Choosing California native plants drastically reduces your water usage, as these species have evolved to thrive during local dry seasons without supplemental irrigation.
  • Check for Acclimation: Local nurseries that grow or source plants specifically for the Sacramento climate ensure your greenery won't suffer transplant shock when moved to your yard.
  • Assess Soil Structure: Before purchasing, consider your home's soil type. Many Sacramento areas contain heavy clay. Consult your nursery staff about local organic amendments like compost or specialized soil blends to improve drainage.
  • Seasonal Timing: Fall is often the best time to plant trees and shrubs in Sacramento. The soil remains warm, which encourages root growth, while the onset of winter rains reduces the burden of frequent manual watering.
  • Health Inspection: Always inspect foliage for signs of pests or root binding before purchasing from a nursery. Avoid plants that are root-bound in their containers as they struggle to establish in open soil.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is buying from a local nursery better than a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries in Sacramento typically source plants that are already acclimated to the Central Valley climate. Unlike big-box stores that often ship inventory from different regions, local operators provide expert guidance on specific pest management, soil amendments, and watering schedules relevant to your exact neighborhood.

Q: What is the best time of year to plant in Sacramento?

A: The ideal planting time for most trees, shrubs, and perennials in Sacramento is during the fall. As temperatures drop and seasonal rains arrive, plants have several months to establish strong root systems before the intense heat of the following summer arrives. Spring is also suitable, provided you are prepared for regular irrigation.

Q: Are native California plants worth the investment?

A: Yes. Native plants are highly evolved to survive Sacramento's Mediterranean climate. Once established, they require significantly less water, fewer fertilizers, and minimal pesticide use compared to non-native ornamental varieties. They also support local pollinators and contribute to a resilient home ecosystem.

Q: What should I look for in soil amendments for local clay soil?

A: In Sacramento's heavy clay soils, focus on organic matter such as high-quality compost or aged bark mulch. These amendments improve soil structure, aeration, and drainage. Many local nurseries, like Talini's or Green Acres, offer specialized blends that help balance pH levels and encourage deep root penetration for fruit trees.

Q: What is the difference between a wholesale nursery and a retail garden center?

A: Wholesale nurseries, such as Matsuda's, primarily serve licensed landscape contractors and large-scale resellers, focusing on volume and production efficiency. Retail garden centers, like The Plant Foundry or The Secret Garden, are designed for the individual homeowner, offering specialized horticultural advice, display gardens, and smaller quantities of plants for home landscape projects.

I have always had pleasant experiences at every Green Acres location I’ve visited, but this one takes the cake. HUGE thank you to Danny - I don’t think I’ve ever had a more pleasant experience due to an employee; he was extremely kind, helpful, and attentive. I visited with my mom to find plants for the backyard. She had gotten her blood drawn earlier in the day so while we were walking around outside, she began to feel very dizzy and sick. I went back inside to see if there was any beverage I could buy that might have electrolytes or something that could help. I asked up front and Danny told me that unfortunately they didn’t, but he offered a hand and helped me get her a bottle of water. He was incredibly thoughtful and very quick to act, I’m grateful that he was there. I might be misremembering her name, but I also want to shout out Louisa!! She was SO helpful in helping us find good plants for what we wanted. She showed us different options, explained how they grew and how to take care of them - overall she was wonderful :)! We ended up purchasing one of the plants she recommended and it already looks beautiful out back. The entire experience has made me want to keep coming back and I can’t recommend this location enough. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, helpful - everything you could ask for and more!!

Their large redwood planters were just what I wanted, and nothing like them was available within driving distance. So although I understood that they do only local sales, I called to inquire. They were helpful and responsive, took my order and my payment remotely, and had the items available for pickup the next week by a local company I hired for that.

Succulent Sirens was absolutely amazing to work with for our wedding! From the very beginning, they were thoughtful, patient, and incredibly helpful in guiding us through the entire floral process. They took the time to explain all of our options, whether we wanted to use real flowers, different variations, or alternative design styles. They had so many beautiful options, but what stood out most was how clearly, they helped us understand everything so we could confidently make decisions. One of the things we appreciated most was the consultation where they brought premade arrangements to show us visually what different styles and combinations could look like. That made such a difference. It helped us truly see the vision instead of just imagining it. They were in constant communication with us to make sure everything aligned with what we wanted. Every detail felt intentional. They were genuine, kind, and truly cared about bringing our vision to life. We also love supporting a local business, and Succulent Sirens exceeded our expectations in every way. We are so grateful for their talent and heart. Highly recommend!
