Buying Guide for FL Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Species: Florida-native plants are naturally adapted to local rainfall patterns and soil chemistry. They require significantly less fertilizer and water once established compared to non-native varieties.
  • Assess Acclimation: Plants grown in local nurseries are already adjusted to the intense South Florida sun and humidity. This reduces transplant shock compared to big-box store stock shipped from northern climates.
  • Inspect for Health: Before buying, check the undersides of leaves for pests, inspect the root ball for signs of being root-bound, and ensure the foliage color is consistent with the species.
  • Understand Hardiness: South Florida’s climate can shift from extreme moisture to periods of drought. Select drought-tolerant specimens for exposed, sunny areas to save on irrigation costs.
  • Planting Seasons: While the Florida climate allows year-round gardening, the best time to plant shrubs and trees is during the cooler months (late fall to early spring) to allow root systems to establish before the heat of summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the primary benefit of buying from a local Boynton Beach nursery?

A: Local nurseries grow plants already acclimated to the specific microclimate of South Florida. Unlike big-box retailers that ship plants from different regions, local nursery stock is accustomed to the high humidity, intense sunlight, and native soil conditions of USDA zones 10b and 11a, resulting in higher survival rates and less long-term maintenance for the homeowner.

Q: When is the best time to plant new trees and shrubs in Boynton Beach?

A: The ideal time to plant is between October and March. This cooler period allows root systems to establish without the intense stress of the mid-summer heat. Planting during this window significantly reduces the water demand for new arrivals and helps prevent heat-related wilting, ensuring a stronger foundation before the rainy season arrives in the spring.

Q: Why should I prioritize native plants in my Florida garden?

A: Native plants are evolutionarily adapted to the local environment, meaning they generally require less irrigation, fewer pesticides, and minimal fertilizer. They support local pollinators and contribute to regional biodiversity. In a landscape that often experiences sandy soil and irregular rainfall, native species are significantly more resilient and easier to maintain than thirsty, non-native ornamentals.

Q: What is the difference between a wholesale nursery and a garden center?

A: Wholesale nurseries typically focus on high-volume production for commercial landscapers and other retailers, often selling in large quantities with less emphasis on the individual retail customer experience. Garden centers are retail-focused, providing specialized care, educational support, and smaller quantities of plants tailored to residential hobbyists, often carrying a curated selection of indoor and outdoor supplies.

Q: Do I need to amend the soil in my Boynton Beach landscape?

A: Yes, South Florida soil is often sandy and lacks high organic matter, which can cause nutrients to leach away quickly. Incorporating high-quality organic compost or biochar, like the products used by specialized local firms, can improve water retention and soil microbial activity. It is crucial to perform a soil test before applying large amounts of fertilizer to avoid unnecessary chemical runoff.

Groundworks team did a phenomenal job on our 3 large Sylvester palms. I couldn’t even get a call back from 5 other companies when I inquired about proper diamond cutting for these palms. I spoke to Richard who was incredibly knowledgeable about these trees and what we could do to properly manicure and trim them. Pricing was reasonable for the amount of work and time that went into these palms. Mine were way overgrown and overdue for a cut. The team that came to do the work was extremely professional and thorough in their trimming, cutting and clean up of the debris. Highly recommend Groundworks and will absolutely use them in the future.

Took a chance and ordered even though I couldn't get a response from the business to verify they were still fulfilling orders from their website even though the retail store has closed. I saw a lot of reviews of people complaining. They couldn't get a hold of the business and I couldn't either so I was nervous. But I didn't find any complaints whatsoever online that they had made any mistakes with orders or had inferior products. So I took a chance. Gamble paid off because I ended up with the healthiest and most cosmetically perfect variegated Anthurium I have ever had.
