This density provides local residents with access to high-quality plant material specifically cultivated for the New England climate. Unlike big-box retailers that ship mass-produced stock from across the country, these local horticultural businesses focus on regional hardiness. Buying Guide for MA Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Plants: Species native to Massachusetts, such as those found at Garden in the Woods, are naturally drought-tolerant once established and require fewer fertilizers or pesticides compared to exotic imports.
  • Assess Local Soil: Many parts of Massachusetts feature rocky or acidic soil. Before planting, utilize the expert advice at centers like Medway or River's Edge to select appropriate soil amendments.
  • Check Plant Vitality: Always inspect the root system and foliage. Avoid plants with yellowing leaves or roots circling the bottom of the container, as these are signs of neglect or poor growing conditions.
  • Understand Planting Seasons: Spring and fall are the ideal times for planting trees and shrubs in New England. Planting during these cooler windows allows root systems to establish before the stress of the mid-summer heat or winter freeze.
  • Support Local Growers: Buying from nurseries that source regionally, like Shrubs & Trees Inc, ensures the specimens have been raised in climates identical to your own garden, significantly increasing their survival rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I choose native plants in Framingham?

A: Native plants are evolutionarily adapted to the Massachusetts climate and local soil composition. They require significantly less water, fewer chemical fertilizers, and provide critical habitats for local pollinators like bees and butterflies. Because they are naturally acclimated, they are more resilient to the region's specific weather cycles, from wet springs to mid-summer droughts, compared to non-native or ornamental imports.

Q: What is the best time of year to plant in Massachusetts?

A: The optimal planting windows are spring, after the danger of frost has passed, and early fall. Planting in the autumn, specifically late September through October, allows roots to establish in the soil while the air temperature is cooler. This gives plants a head start before the harsh New England winter sets in and prepares them for the following year's growing season.

Q: What is the difference between a garden center and a nursery?

A: While often used interchangeably, a nursery typically focuses on the cultivation and propagation of plants, often growing their own stock on-site or at nearby farms. A garden center is generally a retail-focused establishment that sources plants from various growers and provides a wider variety of retail goods, including tools, decorative containers, soil amendments, and hardscaping materials for the residential gardener.

Q: How do I know if my soil needs amendments?

A: Massachusetts soil can be naturally acidic or contain high amounts of clay and granite, which impacts drainage. Before buying fertilizers, it is highly recommended to perform a soil test through the UMass Extension. Local garden centers often carry the appropriate soil amendments, like high-quality compost or lime, to balance your pH levels and improve nutrient availability for specific plants.

Q: Do I need to worry about USDA hardiness zones in Framingham?

A: Yes, USDA hardiness zones are the primary predictor of plant survival in Massachusetts. Framingham typically falls into Zone 6. When purchasing perennials or woody plants, always check the tag to ensure the plant is rated for Zone 6 or lower. Plants rated for higher zones may not survive the deep freezes of a typical Massachusetts winter, leading to plant loss in the spring.

New View is absolutely PHENOMENAL!!! We met with four landscaping companies before deciding to go with New View based on a friend's recommendation, and we are beyond happy we listened to our friend. Dougie and Ryan and the entire team...they are all extremely knowledgeable, reliable, trustworthy, creative, and talented. We thought their vision was beautiful and their finished product was even more gorgeous in real life. We are so happy with our yard, both front and back. Ryan guided us the entire way, checked in consistently, was always on time and positive, professional, and super helpful. He answered every question patiently and was open to altering course at any point to make us happy with the result. He really acted like a GC on our project and each and every sub-contractor he provided was incredible. Thank you, New View, especially Ryan, for giving us the yard of our dreams and then some. We never want to leave!

Medway garden center has an incredible selection and very reasonable prices. I needed help finding the perennials I was looking for and the staff was very helpful. They also have a rewards program that gives you $10 back for every $100 you spend. I had to drive a bit of a distance to get here but it was worth it.

Stopped by on the way home as toddler was having a meltdown after a long drive home from vacation. No intention of purchasing anything since the car was full. Regardless, the owner and staff were so kind and friendly! Owner offered the toy tractor for the little guy to drive around in, showed us the baby chicks, chatted about history of the business and even gave us some beautiful fresh eggs! The trees, shrubs and plants they have are beautiful and look very healthy. I fully believe when you have kind/generous people running a business, the product and service will reflect that. Thank you for your hospitality, it was refreshing! I hope your company continues to grow and succeed!
