Buying Guide for NJ Gardeners

  • Choose Acclimated Plants: New Jersey fluctuates between USDA hardiness zones 6 and 7. Purchasing from local growers like Landex or JMJ ensures that your trees and shrubs are already adapted to local soil conditions and temperature swings.
  • Prioritize Native Species: Native plants require less water, fewer fertilizers, and minimal pesticides once established. They are essential for supporting local pollinators and managing the specific soil types found in the coastal plain.
  • Check Plant Health: Before purchasing, always inspect the root system. If the roots are circling the pot, the plant is root-bound and may struggle to grow after transplanting. Look for vibrant foliage and avoid plants with signs of fungal spots or excessive yellowing.
  • Know Your Nursery Type: Distinguish between retail garden centers (like Twin Pond) and wholesale nurseries (like Coastal). Retail centers offer design advice and a curated shopping experience, whereas wholesale operations are designed for contractors buying in bulk.
  • Understand Planting Seasons: Spring and fall are the prime planting windows in New Jersey. Fall, in particular, allows root systems to establish while the air is cooler, reducing transplant shock before the heat of the next summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time to plant shrubs in New Jersey?

A: The ideal time to plant shrubs in New Jersey is during the spring or fall. Planting in the fall is often superior, as cooler temperatures and higher rainfall help the plant establish a strong root system before the onset of extreme summer heat or winter dormancy. Always ensure the ground is workable and not frozen.

Q: Why should I choose a local nursery over a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries typically grow their own inventory or source it from regional suppliers, ensuring the plants are better acclimated to the specific climate, soil, and pest pressures of New Jersey. Furthermore, local nursery staff offer expert guidance on plant placement and soil requirements, which helps prevent transplant failure and long-term maintenance issues often associated with generic, mass-market plant stock.

Q: How do I know if my garden soil is suitable for planting?

A: Before planting, conduct a soil test through the Rutgers Cooperative Extension. This will identify your soil's pH and nutrient levels. Many New Jersey soils are acidic or sandy, requiring specific amendments like compost or lime. Amending your soil based on test results provides the necessary foundation for healthy growth, ensuring your chosen plants receive the nutrients they need.

Q: Are native plants better than ornamental varieties for my yard?

A: Native plants are generally superior for local yards because they have evolved to thrive in New Jersey's specific rainfall and soil conditions. They require less irrigation, less fertilizer, and almost no pesticides compared to non-native ornamentals. Additionally, they play a critical role in supporting local bird and pollinator populations, making your garden a functional part of the local ecosystem.

Q: What is the main difference between a garden center and a nursery?

A: A nursery typically focuses on the cultivation and wholesale production of plant material, such as trees, shrubs, and perennials. A garden center, however, acts as a retail hub where you find a diverse range of plants alongside garden tools, hardscape materials, fertilizers, and expert advice. While many facilities in Howell offer both, some are strictly production-oriented or exclusively retail-focused.

I called bear creek looking for climbing roses. I spoke to Lisa who told me she was getting them in the following week and she took a deposit and held them for me. I went yesterday to pick them up and was blown away at the selection. Not only did they have a great selection, but I received so much help and advice on what would work best in my garden. I ended up leaving with 13 plants. When I got home to plant- there was an issue with one of them. I emailed and they immediately apologized and offered to make it right. 10/10 experience and I will be back!
