Recently moved from Nassau county and was looking for a local garden center. Personally, I have worked at independent garden centers myself for almost 30 years so I am a bit of a tough critic. This was my 1st trip to Olsen's but definitely won't be my last. I was looking for some sun perennials and a few petite knockout roses, great selection, well maintained plants, and very helpful and knowledgeable staff.
I went to this nursery intending to purchase nine hydrangeas at $60 each. Before visiting, I had read several negative reviews mentioning disrespectful customer service and employees belittling customers. Despite those reviews, I decided to give them a chance. I called ahead to let them know I was on my way to make the purchase. I arrived shortly before closing, around 5:55 PM. As soon as I walked in, an older gentleman made rude comments about me shopping only a few minutes before closing. One younger employee was kind and tried to defuse the situation, even telling me not to listen to him because he was a “grump.” I was prepared to spend over $500, but I left without buying a single plant. I understand that I arrived near closing time, but I had called ahead and expected basic courtesy and professionalism. Instead, I felt unwelcome, belittled, and as though my business was an inconvenience. Unfortunately, the negative reviews I read beforehand turned out to be accurate. I chose not to spend my money at a business that treats customers this way. Respect and customer service matter, regardless of the time of day.

Plants are good. Full stop. 5/25/25 went to buy some plants and during the usually enjoyable experience I had to tolerate a ‘supervisor’ berating the staff of High School boys doing their best to layout the products. This ‘supervisor’ spoke to these young men, who were visibly embarrassed, repeatedly in the same condescending manner. I had to address two of them and apologize for the way she was speaking to them. Had to tell them, they were doing a good job. I won’t go back— ever. that is not how you treat your staff. They never talked back, they were never disrespectful. Unacceptable. Especially on Memorial Day weekend, as a combat vet, whom has fought and lost young boys such as these— you don’t break their spirt. You build it. Do better.
My favorite nursery in long island! Helpful and knowledgeable staff, great assortment of flowers and trees and the best bulk material you can buy! Their compost keeps my garden thriving. Thank you Leslie and team for always providing a wonderful shopping experience
