Do you sell seeds What kind of onion seeds are good for growing onions which will grow big and are keepers?

Hi, thank you for reaching out to us!  We have so many onion seed varieties in several different brands, but the one that stands out ahead of them all for a keeper is the Patterson onion which is stocked on our Territorial Seed rack.  It has a storage capacity of 9-12 months and is a very large, sweet yellow storage onion.

Hi I am wondering what you used to grow your tomato plant so beautifully last year , it was in a huge pot near the registers . Thank you !

Hi Matthew!  Thank you for your question!  I just spoke with our nursery staff and here are the details of how we grew that tomato plant.  The tomato was planted with our pro-organic soil, and amended with seacoast compost and a little chicken manure.   Our Oyster Shell and All Purpose granular mix was added at the time of planting.

We used Soluble Fish Powder 12-1-1 and Calcium 96 soluble powder during the initial growth period.  When it was time to kick up the flowering and fruiting, we switched to Soluble Fish Powder 4-20-0 and kept up with the soluble calcium powder as well.

One of our nursery staff said she used both the soluble fish powders for her tomatoes and peppers last year, and they were the best she's ever seen!

Is there a wheelchair accessible entrance?

Yes, we have access through our outdoor nursery!  There is a ramp on the south side that leads right to our garden department.

Do you have any vermiculite in stock, 4 cubic foot bags, also, what is the cost??  Thanks.

Yes, they do! Perlite and rice hulls, as well. All 3 are in the $20-30 range, I believe.

Question 5

Where could I find some tomato stakes?  My tomatoes need help to stand up straight.  I'm hoping to find stakes about 1/2" diameter, not pencil-thin, feeble, and limber.

Hi there!  We carry several types of plant supports, from the thin type you mentioned that cannot satisfactorily carry the weight of grown tomato plants, to more sturdy structured supports out in our nursery.  We also have some nice bamboo stakes for DIY supports. Definitely give the store a call to speak to a staff member and they can let you know what we have on hand/find something that works for you!  541-342-6820

Do you have any onion or plant starts yet?

Hi there, no onions yet- we are expecting a big order of onion bunches mid-late February.  Keep an eye on our social media platforms, we will definitely announce their arrival!  We have lots of plant starts in the nursery including bare root fruit trees, hellebores, primroses, shrubs, herbs, perennials, and more.

Do you have any 
Pinguicula - Butterworts- Carnivorous plants with sticky leaves?

They very occasionally do, but mostly when they do receive carnivorous plants, they get pitchers and flytraps.

What are the Covid safety practices like here?

Thank you for your question!  We are strongly encouraging social distancing in store, following the current capacity limits, and requiring all employees and customers to wear an appropriate facial covering while in our store and also in our outdoor nursery.
We keep most of our doors and windows open to allow for airflow in the building, and supply hand sanitizer at entrances and our registers for our customers to utilize while they are shopping with us.  There are plexiglass barriers at our cash registers as well.

Do you have kale starts yet?

Question 10

Will you be getting more vegetables in the next two weeks--specifically Diva cucumbers, other Gypsy peppers, and a disease resistant zucchini?

Accepted Answer

Hi Beth!  Thank you for your question.  Our plant buyer looked into it, and our growers are out at this time and she's not seeing any on the availability list.  However, we did get in some Dasher cucumbers, which are a good substitute for Diva.

As far as zucchini, finding a disease resistant/powdery mildew resistant variety is really tricky!  She gives the advice for zucchini success: good sun, lots of air running over and through the plants, and always watering at the base of the plant at soil level and never overhead.

Does Down to Earth sell raised garden beds and weed barriers?

Hi, thank you for your question.  We do not carry raised garden beds or kits, but we do have rolls of Weed Control Fabric in 3x 50' and Paper Mulch as weed control in 3 x 40' available in our garden department.

Can I bring a sample of my dirt/soil to test it to see what kind of nutrients/minerals I need?

Hi Laura,

We do not offer any soil testing services, however we do have some fairly inexpensive Rapitest soil testing kits that can offer high to low results of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potash, and the pH of your soil at home.  If you're looking for a more in depth route, you can also give our garden department a call (541) 342-6820 for a list of local laboratories that you can send a soil sample to for analysis.

Do you have any tropical plants that are safe to put in terrariums for exotic animals?

Hi Sandy, we do not currently have cabbage shredders.  We have had them in the past, but the kitchen buyer has had a hard time finding availability to order.  Thank you for checking with us!

I bought 3 different kinds of morning glory. One of them has developed leaves with 5-7 sharply-pointed parts. I'm wondering if I got a different plant entirely, and if so, what it might be? Can I take a picture and send it to you? Thanks.
