Buying Guide for PA Gardeners

  • Check Climate Zones: Pennsylvania typically falls in USDA zones 6 and 7. Always verify that trees and shrubs are rated for your specific zone to ensure winter survival.
  • Prioritize Native Species: Native plants require less water, fewer fertilizers, and support local pollinators better than exotic imports.
  • Inspect Plant Health: Look for firm root systems, vibrant foliage without yellowing, and an absence of insect webbing or spots.
  • Timing Matters: Buying from local growers means you get plants ready for the current PA season. Spring and autumn are the prime planting times here to avoid the heat stress of mid-July.
  • Understand Local Soil: Much of our region deals with clay-heavy soil. Local garden centers often provide specific amendments like organic compost or expanded shale to improve drainage for your new plantings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time to plant in the Lansdale area?

A: In Pennsylvania, the best time to plant is during the spring after the final frost date—usually early May—or in the early autumn. Autumn planting is particularly effective for trees and shrubs, as it allows root systems to establish in the cooling soil before the ground freezes in winter.

Q: Why should I buy from a local nursery instead of a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries in the Lansdale area provide plants that are specifically acclimated to our regional climate. Unlike big-box stores that often source inventory from distant greenhouses, local nurseries offer superior plant health, expert advice tailored to our specific soil types, and specialized cultivars that thrive in our USDA hardiness zones.

Q: Do I need to amend my soil before planting?

A: Yes, much of the Montgomery and Bucks County region features clay-heavy soil. Before planting, it is highly recommended to mix in high-quality organic compost or soil conditioners purchased from your local garden center. This improves drainage and root aeration, which is essential for ensuring your new plants survive our humid summers and wet winters.

Q: What is the difference between a garden center and a wholesale nursery?

A: A garden center is a retail-focused business designed for the average homeowner, offering finished plants, pottery, and decorative supplies. A wholesale nursery, such as Gro 'n Sell, primarily serves professional landscapers and greenhouses by supplying 'starter' material like plug trays or liners in large quantities, rather than selling single mature plants to the public.

Q: Are native plants better for my Pennsylvania garden?

A: Native plants are excellent choices because they have evolved alongside local Pennsylvania wildlife and climate patterns. They are generally more drought-tolerant, require significantly less fertilizer, and provide the specific nectar or habitat needs of local pollinators, making them a lower-maintenance and more sustainable choice for any local garden layout.

Matt and his team at Green Acres are phenomenal! Matt did beautiful design work for our backyard paver patio and front landscaping, incorporating everything we had wished for. He is responsive, knowledgeable and experienced. He and his installation team were respectful of our property as well as our neighbors. Their workmanship is stellar and their attention to small details is the best. They are extremely easy to work with and their pricing is very fair. We have already recommended them to friends and neighbors! So happy with their work!

I want to thank Sal's Nursery and Landscaping team this past year (2024) for all the work including the Landscaping (Front & Back), Back Paver Patio Refresh, Concrete work (Sidewalk & Paver Patio) that was completed! The team did an outstanding job! The front Landscaping needed a total replacement after 30 years and John A.'s team (Sal's Landscaping) did an outstanding job removing all of the over grown trees and plant material and replaced it with a refreshed landscaping look that exceeded our expectations! The new stamped concrete front walkway was absolutely phenomenal, and we're ecstatic with the outcome! We've gotten great compliments from our Family, Friends and Neighbors on the landscaping and front walkway. A special thanks to John A. for the outstanding design and Jon for managing all the different parts of the project! I would strongly suggest contacting John's Landscaping and Nursery for an outstanding outdoor experience!
