The Nursery & Garden Center Market in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s horticultural landscape is characterized by a high density of specialized retail outlets, with 367 verified nurseries currently serving the state’s diverse gardening population. This market serves a wide range of consumers, from hobbyist urban gardeners to large-scale commercial landscapers. The availability of diverse plant material—ranging from field-grown nursery stock to climate-controlled greenhouse varieties—reflects the state's transition through multiple agricultural regions. Unlike states with monolithic climates, Pennsylvania’s garden center market operates under varying degrees of professional oversight, heavily influenced by the Pennsylvania Nursery & Landscape Association (PNLA). Consumers will notice a clear distinction between seasonal garden centers that focus on annual bedding plants and permanent nurseries that offer long-term perennial, shrub, and tree stock.

Top Cities for Nurseries & Garden Centers

Market data reveals a concentrated distribution of nurseries across the state. Lancaster leads the pack with 25 identified nurseries, followed by Pittsburgh with 21 and Philadelphia with 18. This concentration in Lancaster is tied directly to the region's rich agricultural tradition and long-standing focus on intensive horticultural production. Conversely, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia serve as primary distribution hubs, catering to high-density residential markets where the demand for landscape services and patio-ready container plants is high. Other significant hubs include Lansdale, Reading, Allentown, and Murrysville, each hosting at least 14 nurseries. Harrisburg, Johnstown, and Levittown round out the top tier. These locations indicate that nurseries thrive where land access allows for growing operations while maintaining proximity to urban populations requiring immediate access to landscape materials.

Pennsylvania Climate & Plant Selection

Pennsylvania presents a complex horticultural environment, spanning USDA Hardiness Zones 5b through 7b. This wide range forces nurseries to curate inventories based on specific microclimates. The northern and mountainous regions of the state face harsher winters, requiring cold-hardy species, whereas the southeastern corner enjoys a longer growing season, permitting the successful cultivation of more sensitive woody ornamentals. Soil composition varies dramatically across the state, ranging from the heavy, clay-rich soils of the Piedmont province to the limestone-derived soils prevalent in the Great Valley. This soil variability dictates what nurseries stock; successful garden centers in PA prioritize native plants that are adapted to these specific local conditions. Common stock includes Acer rubrum (Red Maple), various Viburnum species, and native ferns that thrive in the state’s moderate to high annual rainfall, which typically ranges from 35 to 50 inches per year. Nurseries are increasingly emphasizing drought-tolerant native perennials, which minimize water input for the end-user while providing essential ecological services to pollinators. Field-grown stock from local growers often performs better in Pennsylvania landscapes than greenhouse-grown imports, as the former is already acclimated to the regional photoperiod and temperature fluctuations.

Sourcing Plants Locally in PA

For homeowners and commercial contractors looking to source high-quality plant material, consider the following strategies:

  • Seek Field-Grown Maturity: Look for nurseries that propagate their own woody ornamentals. Plants grown in local soil conditions often have stronger root systems than those shipped from southern nurseries.
  • Verify Plant Hardiness: Always confirm the USDA hardiness zone of your specific location in Pennsylvania before purchasing, especially for trees and shrubs that must survive the winter.
  • Prioritize Native Plant Inventory: Identify garden centers that feature dedicated sections for Pennsylvania native species, as these require fewer inputs and are better suited for regional biodiversity.
  • Check Seasonal Scheduling: Note that premium garden centers like Stauffers of Kissel Hill or Ott's Exotic Plants maintain different inventory cycles. Early spring is optimal for bare-root stock, while late summer is better for planting containerized perennials to allow for autumn root development before the ground freezes.
  • Local Expertise: Establish a rapport with local staff at hubs like Greensburg Agway or Colonial Gardens. Their specific knowledge regarding local pests, such as the Spotted Lanternfly, is invaluable for successful garden management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When is the best time to plant trees in Pennsylvania?

A: The optimal time for planting trees in Pennsylvania is during the dormant season, specifically early spring before bud break or mid-to-late autumn after leaf drop. Planting during these windows allows the root system to establish itself in the state’s soil before the intense heat of summer or the deep frost of winter, ensuring higher survival rates for nursery-bought stock.

Q: Why are native plants recommended for PA landscapes?

A: Native plants, such as those sold in top Pennsylvania nurseries, are evolved to handle the state’s specific rainfall patterns, humidity levels, and soil chemistry. They require less supplemental water, minimal fertilizer, and almost no pesticides compared to non-native varieties. Furthermore, they provide critical habitat for local pollinators, making them the most sustainable choice for any garden center customer.

Q: How do I choose the right nursery for specialized perennials?

A: Select a nursery that focuses on perennial production rather than one that shifts its inventory entirely to holiday decor or annuals. Look for retailers that offer information on soil amendments suited to your region. Nurseries that grow their own stock, or partner with local Pennsylvania growers, generally provide healthier specimens that have not been stressed by long-distance shipping or improper storage.

Q: Does the Spotted Lanternfly affect my nursery plant purchases?

A: Yes. As the Spotted Lanternfly is a significant pest in Pennsylvania, local nurseries are under strict regulations to inspect their stock. When purchasing plants, especially host species like Ailanthus or certain fruit trees, ensure you are buying from verified, reputable nurseries that adhere to state-mandated quarantine and inspection protocols to prevent the further spread of this destructive invasive insect.

Q: What soil preparation is needed for Pennsylvania gardens?

A: Most of Pennsylvania features heavy clay or rocky, limestone-based soils. Before planting, perform a professional soil test to determine pH and nutrient levels. Many garden centers offer kits or advice on amending soil with organic matter, such as compost or aged bark, which improves drainage and root aeration. Always avoid planting directly into heavy, un-amended clay, as this can lead to root rot.

My girlfriend and I went to the blueberry festival and we had a great time at the petting zoo.... Especially with the eager little goat that kept coming us to us trying to manipulate us for treats, ha ha ha.... the staff were very attentive and friendly. Then, we walked around, and we saw all the chickens. Everybody seemed to be having a good time, and then we went over to get our giant blueberry mason jar ice cream treat. Linvilla farms, please bring back the blueberry treat from Bluberry festival of 2025 with the blueberry pie and blueberry whoopi pie on a stick.... Linvella orchards is an amazing way to spend your afternoon.

We couldn’t be happier with our experience at Holly Days! Shannon assisted my family with finding bushes that would complement our house. She went above and beyond by looking at pictures of our home and finding the perfect plants! She was extremely patient with us and answered all of our questions. Furthermore, she was great with our 2 year old son, encouraging him to explore all the plants. Before we left she provided us with everything we needed for planting and plant care and encouraged us to call with any questions. We will definitely be using Holly Days in the future with any and all planting and landscaping needs!

Had a super fun time at the Rock and Gem show. There were so many vendors! And a few food trucks which was nice. The kids live Brewster's ice cream. Stopped at the market after the show and got some fresh produce, cheese and a $5 pick and mix candy box for the kids to share in their new section
