Buying Guide for UT Gardeners

  • Climate Acclimation: Utah's high altitude creates intense UV exposure and rapid temperature swings. Buying from local growers ensures plants are already hardened off to the regional environment, reducing transplant shock.
  • Focus on Native Species: Incorporating plants like native grasses and shrubs saves water. These species are naturally adapted to Cache Valley’s soil composition and seasonal rainfall patterns.
  • Inspect for Health: Look for firm, healthy roots rather than just full top growth. Avoid plants with yellowing leaves or signs of pests. A well-stocked local nursery will have staff who can inspect the root ball with you.
  • Seasonal Timing: Cache Valley has a short growing season. Respect the last frost dates—usually mid-to-late May. Using professional vegetable starts from local greenhouses can jump-start your harvest in this tight window.
  • Soil Preparation: Most Logan soil is heavy clay. Before purchasing large quantities of nursery stock, consult with your local supplier about organic amendments, such as compost, which can improve drainage and nutrient uptake in your specific location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time to start planting in Logan, Utah?

A: In Logan, the threat of frost typically persists until late May. Most gardeners wait until the end of May or early June to plant warm-season crops like tomatoes and peppers. Hardy perennials and cool-season vegetables can be planted as soon as the soil is workable in April or early May.

Q: Why should I choose a local nursery over a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries in Cache Valley carry stock specifically sourced for our climate. Big-box retailers often ship plants from warmer regions that may struggle with the altitude and temperature fluctuations of Northern Utah. Local growers provide expert advice on regional soil and pest issues.

Q: Are native plants better for my Logan garden?

A: Yes, native plants are adapted to Utah's dry summers and cold winters. They require significantly less water once established and provide essential support for local pollinators. They are naturally resistant to common regional pathogens, making them a low-maintenance choice for residential landscapes.

Q: How do I improve the heavy clay soil common in this area?

A: Clay soil in the valley lacks proper drainage. The best approach is to incorporate significant amounts of organic matter, such as high-quality compost or aged manure, into the top 6 to 12 inches of soil. This helps break up the clay, improve aeration, and allow roots to penetrate deeper.

Q: What distinguishes a garden center from a plant nursery?

A: A nursery primarily focuses on the propagation and cultivation of plants from seeds or cuttings. A garden center typically functions as a retail outlet that may source plants from growers while providing additional supplies like fertilizers, hardscape materials, tools, and decorative items for the home gardener.

We had an amazing experience working with the Wilde team for the flowers at our wedding! They created a bridal bouquet, bridesmaids and mothers corsages, dads and groomsmen boutonnieres, table centerpieces, and ceremony arch pieces. Marcie and Ky and their whole team are so passionate about what they do, and it was infectious throughout the planning process. We appreciated the chance to meet with them multiple times to ensure they were putting together things that met our (limited) vision and budget preferences. They were able to translate the things that were most important to us (wildflowers, color, and "natural" look for summertime in the area) into a vibrant and cohesive outcome. On the day of our wedding, a huge rainstorm rolled through the area, which required them to be flexible with setup time and process. They took it in-stride and were still able to get everything in place on-time and the way we wanted it! Everyone who attended the wedding was so impressed by and complimentary of the flowers. Wilde also hosted a bouquet making event for the bachelorette group the day before the wedding. It was great for everyone to meet Marcie and Ky and their team and learn why we had chosen them to do the flowers at our wedding. We felt so welcomed and involved by the Wilde team throughout the process!

Great place with accommodating and kind staff. They answered their phone when I called, and actually had 1 left of the product I needed right away. They were kind enough to hold it for me til I arrived about an hour later. It will be great when their new store is constructed. Until then, you really are outstanding in your field! Thx for the superb customer service!

The greenhouse in the Spring is like walking into Kew Gardens—a riot of color and good smells with a happy vibe. They have an impressive variety of quality plant material indoors and out—often one can find a surprise rare plant tucked in with the other sure-to-grow varieties. The plants are easy to get to, to see and touch. My wife and I have found the employees always cheerfully willing help and interested. No “big-box” bored, unknowledgeable workers here! The clucking and mewing of the chickens that wander the property is yet another nice detail. Cache Valley is lucky to have them!

Best place to choose a tree for your property. I love buying directly from the grower. They’re so knowledgeable and explain to you how to plant it properly so that it will do well. There are lots of options . We have loved the peach tree, hydrangea tree and weeping white spruce that we got from them!
