Buying Guide for WA Gardeners

  • Climate Acclimation: Always source plants from local growers. Plants raised in a greenhouse environment in Washington are already conditioned for regional humidity levels, temperature fluctuations, and typical soil pH found in the Inland Northwest.
  • Inspection Checklist: Before buying, check for signs of stress. Look for yellowing leaves, root-bound containers, or evidence of pests. A healthy plant should show active growth and firm, well-spaced foliage.
  • Native Species Benefits: Prioritize native perennials. These plants offer superior drought tolerance and require fewer chemical interventions, making them easier to manage while providing essential support for local pollinators.
  • Seasonal Timing: Timing is critical. Spokane's planting window typically opens after the final spring frost in May. Plan your garden purchases early to ensure you get the best selection of perennials and vegetable starts before the heat of summer sets in.
  • Soil Amendments: Understand your soil. Many Spokane Valley areas have rocky or clay-heavy soil. Mixing in organic compost or bark mulch—often available at landscape supply centers—improves drainage and nutrient retention for your new plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time of year to plant in Spokane Valley?

A: The ideal planting window in Spokane Valley typically begins after the final frost in mid-to-late May. Planting during this time allows root systems to establish in the warming soil before the peak heat of summer arrives, significantly increasing the survival rate for both perennials and vegetable starts.

Q: Why should I buy plants from a local nursery instead of a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries provide plants acclimated to Washington’s specific climate, meaning they are better prepared for local soil pH and temperature swings. Big-box stores often source stock from different climates, which can lead to transplant shock. Local nurseries also offer expert advice tailored to regional gardening challenges, ensuring you buy the right plant for your specific sun exposure.

Q: What is the difference between a garden center and a wholesale nursery?

A: A garden center is designed for the public, offering retail quantities of plants, soil, tools, and professional guidance. A wholesale nursery usually focuses on large-scale production for professional landscapers and commercial partners. While some nurseries offer both, wholesale-only operations may require bulk purchases or business verification for access to their inventory.

Q: Are native plants better for the Spokane climate?

A: Yes, native plants are evolved for the Inland Northwest. They generally possess higher drought tolerance and are better adapted to regional soil types. By choosing native species, you typically reduce the need for supplemental watering, chemical fertilizers, and heavy maintenance, while also providing critical food and habitat for local pollinators.

Q: How do I know if the soil in my yard needs amendments?

A: Spokane Valley soil can be rocky or clay-heavy. A simple jar test or professional soil test kit can reveal your soil's composition. If the soil is hard or drains poorly, mixing in organic compost or aged bark mulch—often sold in bulk at local landscape supply centers—is an essential step to improve aeration and nutrient availability.

We ordered 10 pallets of sod for a landscape project. We talked to Brandon who I can not say enough good things about. Great communication... Great advice on what do do after the sod was laid. The product was fantastic. If you are in need of sod I would not think twice about using Gibson's!!!

Very clean greenhouse, healthy plants, pleasant and helpful staff. Great choice for basic garden plants. I might be unusual, but when I go to an independent nursery or greenhouse, I hope to find new and interesting plants. Unfortunately, their inventory is just what is commonly available from big wholesalers.
