About the Nursery

Retail Garden Center Nursery. Top products: Trees, Shrubs, Roses, Vegetable starts, Houseplants. Armstrong Garden Centers is a long-standing horticultural retailer established in 1889, operating over 25 retail nursery locations. The company functions as a comprehensive garden center, offering a wide inventory of ornamental plants, trees, shrubs, perennials, and edible vegetable starts like tomatoes and peppers. Their business model serves both residential homeowners and professional landscapers through a combination of retail plant sales, online ordering with curbside pickup, and professional landscape design and installation services. A core component of their value proposition is their 'Gardening Without Guesswork' philosophy, providing expert horticultural guidance from employee-owners. They emphasize quality control, noting that plants are inspected upon arrival to ensure they meet their internal standards. Their commitment to plant health is reinforced by a lifetime guarantee on all trees and shrubs sold. The organization focuses on regional plant selection, tailoring their inventory to the specific environmental and geographic needs of the local communities they serve. Beyond plant material, they provide essential gardening supplies and educational resources to support successful garden cultivation.

I do really love this place, and I try to support smaller chains over massive corporations like Home Depot and Lowe's. I'm a HUGE plant collector, and have bought a bunch of plants here, many I've had for years. They have good quality plants, and knowledgeable staff. While I'd love to give them 5 stars, they have a wonky return policy that isn't written anywhere or disclosed at the time of purchase. I recently bought a hydrangea, that lasted all of two weeks, and I did EVERYTHING I could to keep her happy. They cost about $35, which isn't much, but I brought it back for advice and to possibly exchange it for something more durable. The cashier asked me a few questions, and confirmed I didn't really do anything wrong, and essentially said they were just dramatic plants. When I asked if I could return it, he said this store had a policy about not issuing refunds or store credit specifically for hydrangeas because of their failure rate. I asked why this wasn't disclosed at purchase, and he just shrugged. I went on to spend another $150 on new plants, but I left questioning my loyalty to this store, and will likely look to other nurseries in the future.
