About the Nursery

Cactus and Succulent Nursery. Top products: Cacti, Succulents, Columnar Specimens, Aloe Vera, Opuntias. California Nursery Specialties, often referred to as the 'Cactus Ranch,' is a prominent horticultural facility located in Reseda, California, specializing in the propagation and retail of a vast array of cacti and succulents. Founded in 1976 by David Bernstein, the nursery operates on a 1.5-acre site that includes extensive display gardens and a series of greenhouses housing over 100,000 individual plants. Unlike general garden centers, this business focuses exclusively on desert flora, ranging from small window-sill specimens to large, mature landscape columnar cacti. The nursery distinguishes itself through a commitment to ethical sourcing; nearly all inventory is produced via propagation from seed, cuttings, or grafting, avoiding the ecological damage associated with wild collection. Serving a diverse clientele of homeowners, estate owners, and commercial landscapers, the nursery provides plants for both indoor 'living sculpture' and outdoor water-wise, drought-tolerant landscaping. While primarily a production grower, it invites the public to explore their extensive collection on weekends, offering personalized service and referrals to landscape contractors for custom installations. The business emphasizes the unique aesthetic and architectural versatility of succulents and cacti, catering to styles ranging from desert-themed gardens to modern, minimalist interior design.

Overall, I am impressed yet disappointed in my first, and probably last visit. For the good, they have the most mature plants I've seen. The place is huge. It's wonderful if you just want to look. That's where the good ends. I went to shop and shop big and wound up leaving empty handed. Here were the issues in no particular order: 1. It is so big and the green houses are so hot, but they don't have seats to take a break if needed. 2. None of the plants are labeled, so if you visually don't know what you are looking for, you are out of luck. 3. I was near three employees who never acknowledged me let alone asked if I needed assistance. They acted as if I wasn't there. No hi, no Hola. Nothing. 4. The plants are not only not I'D, but they are not priced. From looking at another review I saw they have a posting somewhere showing pricing by pot size. I didn't see it while I was there. This place seems to be catered to their wholesale customers, so maybe they don't care for the retail customers. I left feeling overheated and unappreciated. I drove directly to Desert Creations instead where they are much nicer to deal with.
