Buying Guide for CO Gardeners

  • Prioritize Acclimation: Buy plants grown in Colorado or high-altitude conditions. Locally acclimated stock has already been exposed to our specific UV levels and temperature swings, reducing transplant shock.
  • Check Soil Health: Colorado soil is often alkaline and clay-heavy. Purchase high-quality organic amendments or specific potting mixes recommended by your local nursery to improve drainage and nutrient uptake.
  • Understand Hardiness Zones: Always check the USDA zone for your specific property elevation. A plant that thrives in Denver may struggle at higher elevations near the Pikes Peak foothills.
  • Inspect Plant Vitality: Before purchasing, check the root ball for signs of being pot-bound. Ensure stems are firm and foliage shows no signs of pests or disease—common issues in non-acclimated big-box stock.
  • Embrace Native Species: Incorporate native plant species for higher drought tolerance. Native plants have evolved to survive our dry summers and require less supplemental irrigation once established.
  • Seasonal Timing: Our growing season is short. Focus on purchasing perennials in the spring or early fall to give roots time to establish before the extremes of summer or winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the primary benefit of buying from a local Colorado Springs nursery?

A: Local nurseries stock plants already acclimated to the high-altitude, semi-arid climate of the Pikes Peak region. Unlike big-box stores, their inventory is curated to handle Colorado's intense solar radiation, extreme temperature fluctuations, and alkaline soil, ensuring a much higher long-term survival rate for your garden.

Q: When is the best time to plant in Colorado Springs?

A: The ideal planting time is typically between mid-May, after the last frost date, and mid-June. Fall planting is also highly effective for trees, shrubs, and perennials, as the cooling soil temperatures help roots establish before winter dormancy without the heat stress of the summer season.

Q: Why should I use soil amendments in my garden?

A: Colorado soils are predominantly heavy clay with high pH levels, which can restrict nutrient uptake and drainage. Adding organic matter like compost, humus, or specialized potting mixes from local garden centers is crucial to breaking up clay, improving aeration, and creating a balanced foundation for your root systems.

Q: What defines a 'native' plant for the Colorado Front Range?

A: Native plants are species that naturally occurred in the Colorado foothills and plains prior to development. They are genetically adapted to local rainfall patterns and soil types, requiring significantly less water and fertilizer than ornamental species once they have become established in your landscape.

Q: How do I choose between a nursery and a standard garden center?

A: A nursery typically focuses on the cultivation and supply of plant stock, often including large trees and shrubs suitable for landscaping. A garden center usually offers a broader retail experience, including tools, decorative pots, soil amendments, and seasonal accessories, making them better suited for one-stop garden planning.

Out of every plant nursery I’ve ever been to, the plants at this nursery were by far the best taken care of. They had a great variety of large and small plants, propagated clippings, and pots. The employee there was also very knowledgeable on every plant in the store! Absolutely love this place and will be recommending it to all of my fellow plant lovers and those who are looking to get their first plants as well! Highly recommend.

This place should be called Summerland PARADISE!! I got a delicious latte for only $5, as their coffee shop is donation based! Their veggies/fruits/herbs are all mostly non-GMO, which is SO important to me! The variety of these plants was amazing! Staff was so incredibly helpful and sweet—even this hummingbird thought so too.
