Buying Guide for FL Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Plants: Species like Firebush and Yaupon Holly are naturally adapted to local soil and weather patterns. They require less fertilizer, less water, and provide essential habitats for local pollinators.
  • Check Root Health: When shopping at a garden center, always inspect the pot. Roots should be firm and white. Avoid plants with circling, pot-bound roots, as these often struggle to establish after transplanting into the ground.
  • Acclimation Matters: Buying from local Groveland growers ensures plants are already accustomed to Florida's intense sunlight and humidity. Big-box stores often ship inventory from different climate zones, which leads to higher mortality rates in your yard.
  • Understand Your Soil: Central Florida soil is notoriously sandy and low in organic matter. Work with nurseries that provide guidance on soil amendments, compost, and proper mulching techniques to retain moisture during the dry season.
  • Planting Windows: While Florida allows for year-round planting, the best time to establish trees and shrubs is during the cooler months of fall and early spring. This allows the root systems to establish before the stress of the intense summer heat kicks in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I choose native plants in Groveland?

A: Native plants, such as those found at Green Isle Gardens, have evolved to thrive in Florida's specific climate and soil conditions. They require significantly less supplemental water, fertilizer, and pesticides once established. Additionally, native flora supports the local ecosystem by providing nectar and habitats for Florida's unique pollinator populations, making them the most sustainable choice for any landscape.

Q: What is the best time of year to plant trees in Florida?

A: The ideal planting window for trees and shrubs in Florida is during the cooler months, specifically from October through early spring. Planting during these times allows the root system to establish itself in the soil before the onset of the extreme summer heat and frequent drought stress, which can prove fatal to newly installed landscape stock.

Q: What is the difference between a nursery and a garden center?

A: A nursery typically focuses on the cultivation and propagation of plants from seeds, cuttings, or grafts, often specializing in specific categories like fruit trees or bamboo. A garden center is primarily a retail facility that may buy stock from multiple nurseries to provide a broader variety of plants, tools, chemicals, and soil amendments for the average home gardener.

Q: How do I amend sandy Florida soil for new plantings?

A: Florida's sandy soil drains quickly and lacks nutrients. To improve your planting hole, mix the existing soil with high-quality organic matter like compost or aged peat. This amendment helps retain water and nutrients near the root zone. Avoid creating a large pit of rich soil in the middle of sand, as this can encourage roots to stay confined rather than spreading outward.

Q: Are local nurseries better than big-box stores?

A: Local nurseries in Groveland typically offer plants that are grown in Florida or already acclimated to the specific microclimate of the region. Big-box retailers often source inventory from northern states, resulting in plants that are not conditioned for Florida's humidity or intense solar radiation. Local growers also provide expert knowledge tailored to your specific garden needs, which is rarely found at mass-market outlets.

I absolutely loved my tour of Green Daze Exotics. Judson Giddens, the owner, Gave a presentation about the vanilla orchid to our Lake County Permaculture group. I was so impressed by his talk and purchasing the vanilla orchid that I wanted to visit his nursery and see exactly what he had. Wow! He has a lot and for a plant lover like me it was like being at Disney World. I bought cardamom, turmeric, and I’m going back for more. He does most of his business online shipped right to your door, but if you’re local, you can set up an appointment to pick up plants in Groveland.

Are you looking for the best place to purchase bamboo plants? Then look no further Beautiful Bamboo is the place to go. I was looking for bamboo plants but when I saw the price at other places I was wondering if I could afford the plants. Then I found Beautiful Bamboo and Jennifer was able to help me with plants that were in the clearance area, nothing was wrong with them just needing some TLC. Jennifer was a wealth of knowledge before and after the sale. When I went to pick up the plants Ryan and Donna made sure the plants were wrapped up and after a hour drive home I didn’t lose one leave off the plants, great job. This shows how much they care about the plants and Ryan made sure that I understood on how to plant and take care of the plants. Thanks to Jennifer, Ryan and Donna you made my backyard project a reality.

If you don’t know Things that Grow yet, you need to. We needed a big replacement Ligustrum tree for front of the house. Jenna was great in assisting with the selection in their extensive inventory. Install went smoothly and the guys were great to work with. The tree is gorgeous! Things to Grow even has a garden center on south 33 just off Hwy 50, super easy to get to (across from the airport if you know that area) you gotta stop in there. It’s so cute. Great selection too. I’m so glad we found them. Thanks y’all!

This is a top notch outfit. I ordered online and was apprehensive as how it would all go when I got there. Starting with the gentleman at the guard gate who guided me to where I should park. Then Dalvi immediately walked up to me to discuss my order and his two assistants went and got it. Then, they proceeded to load it all for me! All the trees/ plants looked like the photos on their website. They were all really professional. My appointment was at 10 AM. I got there at 9:45 And was out of there by 10:20 . I’ll be back . I highly recommend.

My husband and I were in the area of Groveland, back in the fall, when we came across Marian Gardens Tree Farm. We wanted to look at Holly Trees. Jessica Dasher, is the person who helped us. She is very knowledgeable, regarding the many trees that they offer. She was very patient with us, as we were very particular about the size and look of the tree. She spent a great deal of time with us and was very kind, you could tell she loved her job. In-fact, when I asked her about her job, she told me she loved working at Marian Gardens. We had a great experience, and I highly recommend Marian Gardens for your tree needs.
