About the Nursery

Native Plant Specialty Nursery. Top products: Native milkweeds, Perennial plants, Edible herbs, Medicinal plants. Established in 1982, Florida Native Plants Nursery & Landscaping is a Sarasota-based horticultural business dedicated to promoting ecological gardening through the use of native flora. The nursery specializes in providing site-specific plants—including various milkweed species crucial for Monarch and Queen butterfly conservation—that thrive in Florida’s diverse soil and moisture conditions. Beyond retail nursery sales, the business offers professional design and consultation services aimed at helping homeowners and commercial clients replace traditional high-maintenance landscapes with sustainable, biodiversity-supporting ecosystems. Their approach emphasizes the 'right plant for the right place' philosophy, significantly reducing the need for irrigation, pesticides, and fertilizers. Widely recognized for their environmental stewardship, the nursery has received numerous awards for ecosystem restoration and sustainable business practices. They serve a broad clientele interested in creating bird and pollinator-friendly habitats, edible gardens, and environmentally sensitive residential or commercial landscapes.

I've been buying here for the last couple of years. Customer service is very knowledgeable and overall great. The best thing is there plants live! To name a couple, the two coral honeysuckles I bought last year have already overgrown their 8 foot trellis and the most recent batch of blue sage I bought about 6 weeks ago are doing great. Don't overlook their potting soil as it works great working with seedlings. I suggest you get there early Thursdays as I might beat you to the good stuff!

This place is a hidden gem. So much closer to town than you think and worth the trip. I am slowly replacing my dying lawn with natives, and the staff here is so friendly and willing to share their knowledge, which is vast. I learn something new every time I visit, and have added almost 10 native species to my teeny little urban yard. I see so many different native butterflies every day year round, and my soffits are covered in empty cocoons, mostly gulf coast fritillary.

They have some hard to find Florida native plants including frog fruit, which I've been trying hard to find for a while to help control erosion on my property. They are also very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. Great nursery for Florida native plant lovers!
