Buying Guide for MI Gardeners

  • Prioritize Acclimation: Buy plants from nurseries that grow their stock locally or in similar climates. Michigan-grown plants are better prepared for the fluctuations between winter freezes and humid summer heat than imports from warmer southern regions.
  • Inspect for Health: Before purchase, check the underside of leaves for pests and inspect the root system. If roots are circling the pot, the plant is pot-bound and may struggle to establish in your landscape.
  • Understand Your Zone: Kalamazoo typically falls into USDA zones 5b and 6a. Select native species that have evolved for these conditions; they require less supplemental watering and fewer soil amendments once established.
  • Timing Matters: Mid-spring is ideal for planting hardy trees and shrubs, while tender annuals should wait until the danger of frost has passed in late May.
  • Soil Prep: Invest in local compost or organic amendments before planting. Michigan soil varies from sandy to clay-heavy, so testing your soil pH provides a baseline for choosing plants that will actually thrive.
  • Support Local Growers: Choosing a locally-owned garden center often grants you access to expert advice on specific regional challenges, such as local deer pressure or common plant diseases prevalent in Kalamazoo county.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is it better to buy plants from a local Kalamazoo nursery?

A: Local nurseries grow plants in Michigan’s specific climate zones. Because these plants are already acclimated to the local soil chemistry, temperature swings, and humidity levels, they experience significantly less transplant shock when moved to your garden compared to greenhouse-grown plants shipped from different geographic regions.

Q: What is the best time of year to plant trees in Michigan?

A: The ideal time to plant trees in Kalamazoo is during the dormant season. Early spring (before buds break) or early autumn (after the heat of summer but before the ground freezes) allows roots to establish themselves without the stress of extreme heat or lack of moisture.

Q: How do I know if my soil is right for native plants?

A: Kalamazoo soil varies significantly. Before planting, perform a simple soil test to check the pH and nutrient levels. Native plants are adapted to local conditions, but they still require proper drainage. If you have heavy clay or very sandy soil, incorporating organic compost helps balance the texture.

Q: What is the difference between a wholesale nursery and a garden center?

A: Wholesale nurseries typically focus on high-volume production for commercial landscapers and retailers, often selling in large batches. Garden centers are retail-oriented, catering to individual homeowners. They provide smaller quantities, expert staff for consumer advice, and additional landscaping supplies like fertilizer, decorative pots, and specialized soil mixes.

Q: How can I protect my plants from Michigan's unpredictable spring frosts?

A: Keep a close eye on local weather forecasts during late spring. If a late frost is predicted, cover tender plants and vegetable starts with burlap, row covers, or even old bedsheets overnight. Avoid using plastic directly against leaves, as it can transfer cold and cause frost damage.

I was introduced to River Street Flowerland by a dear friend in 2025. I have now been there several times and it is fast becoming one of my favorite places. The staff is extremely kind, very knowledgeable and always willing to help. They have a wide variety of both perennials and annuals and the plants are very healthy. They also have lots of beautiful pots and a wide variety of interesting art to further decorate your garden spaces. You must check out their topiaries! In the spring you go in and plant your topiaries and then leave them at the greenhouse to get a good start on their growth. It’s always fun to see what they look like when you go to pick them up and bring them home. I am already looking forward to my next visit!

My journey with Mason jar plant shop started a year ago. I was on a Hoya group and someone said that Mason Jar had a good selection of Hoyas. I reached out to the company and found a mother/daughter owned company. With a great story behind their company name. The owners have been super helpful with plant suggestions and plant care. They also stand behind their business and care for their customers. Please give Mason Jar plant shop your business if you are local or not. You will not be disappointed.
