About the Nursery

Houseplant and exotic specialty nursery. Top products: rare exotic houseplants, terrarium supplies, indoor plant accessories, decorative plant containers. Mason Jar Plant Shop is a family-owned botanical boutique located in downtown Kalamazoo, specializing in the retail sale of diverse houseplant varieties and rare exotic specimens. The business serves as both a traditional plant retailer and an interactive horticultural center, providing customers with indoor plants, specialized potting media, and curated decor. A core component of their operation is the interactive Terrarium Bar, which facilitates educational engagement by allowing customers to construct their own miniature indoor ecosystems using live plant material. By focusing on indoor plant care, hard-to-find plant gems, and ongoing horticultural support, the shop functions as a resource for local enthusiasts, homeowners, and those seeking interior greenery. Their mission emphasizes community building through plant education and the promotion of local craftsmanship, positioning the shop as a destination for both hobbyist plant collection and interactive, plant-based social experiences.

My journey with Mason jar plant shop started a year ago. I was on a Hoya group and someone said that Mason Jar had a good selection of Hoyas. I reached out to the company and found a mother/daughter owned company. With a great story behind their company name. The owners have been super helpful with plant suggestions and plant care. They also stand behind their business and care for their customers. Please give Mason Jar plant shop your business if you are local or not. You will not be disappointed.

Prices have increased significantly. The price tag will indicate an additional $4 or more compared to the previous price. Update: changed my review due to their response back, I will not be coming back especially if you can’t handle any negative reviews, it’s my right. you wanted an example of the prices but look you’re not allowed to take photos! lol.

Updated review after response: My review reflects my honest experience during my recent visit. Referencing my review history instead of addressing the feedback itself felt unprofessional. I don’t compare small businesses to big box stores—I compare value to what’s being offered and that unfortunately is dead plants and zero customer service. After reading other customer reviews, the tone of your response is unfortunately consistent with concerns about customer service and rudeness. I’ll be updating my review to reflect not only my in-store experience, but this interaction as well. Best of luck! It was a pretty cool place a few years ago but went back and the store is overpriced for dry plants. Selection is very limited now.

Super cute locally owned plant shop. The owner helped me replant a succulent I had neglected. There is a terrarium bar with lots of plant and pebble options, would make a great gift for anyone. Prices were fair, about what I’ve paid at bigger chains. Highly recommend checking Mason Jar out!
