Buying Guide for SC Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Species: South Carolina native plants are adapted to local soil pH and moisture levels. They require less supplemental water once established and provide critical support for local pollinators.
  • Seasonal Planting Windows: Autumn in the Lowcountry is often superior to spring for planting trees and shrubs. Milder temperatures allow roots to establish before the stress of the intense summer heat.
  • Inspect for Health: Before purchase, check the underside of leaves for pests and examine the pot for root-bound conditions. A healthy root system should be firm and white or light tan.
  • Soil Amendments: Lowcountry soil often requires organic enrichment. Consult with your local nursery staff regarding your specific site conditions to determine if your soil needs pine bark, compost, or specific amendments to balance acidity.
  • Avoid Big-Box Limitations: Local nurseries often carry regional varieties that are not stocked by national chains. Buying locally ensures that the genetics of your plants are already attuned to the specific humidity and pest pressures of the Bluffton region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time of year to plant in Bluffton, SC?

A: The ideal planting window for most trees, shrubs, and perennials in the Lowcountry is during the fall, from October through November. The soil remains warm enough to encourage root growth, while the cooler air temperatures reduce transpiration stress on the plants. Spring is the secondary window, but requires more consistent supplemental watering as the summer heat approaches.

Q: Why should I buy plants from a local nursery instead of a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries stock varieties specifically acclimated to the South Carolina climate. Plants at big-box retailers are often sourced from national nurseries in different climate zones, which may not thrive in the high humidity and sandy soil typical of Beaufort County. Furthermore, local nursery staff offer diagnostic advice tailored to local pests and diseases.

Q: Are native plants better for my Bluffton home garden?

A: Yes. Native plants have evolved to handle South Carolina’s specific weather patterns, including our intense summer heat and seasonal moisture fluctuations. Once established, native species typically require less fertilizer, fewer chemical pesticides, and significantly less supplemental water, making them the most sustainable and low-maintenance choice for residential landscapes in the region.

Q: How do I know if my soil needs amendments before planting?

A: Most Lowcountry soil is sandy and can be nutrient-deficient or have an acidic pH. Before adding plants, perform a soil test through the Clemson University Cooperative Extension. Based on the results, you may need to add organic matter such as compost or pine bark fines, which are readily available at most local landscape supply centers.

Q: What is the difference between a wholesale nursery and a retail garden center?

A: A retail garden center is designed for the general public, offering smaller quantities of plants, gifts, and diagnostic advice. A wholesale nursery, such as Green Goods, typically restricts sales to licensed landscaping professionals and requires tax documentation. They operate in high volumes to support large-scale professional installations rather than individual home gardening projects.

We purchased a Sabo palm tree from Taylor’s Nursery at the end of May, and unfortunately it died within a few weeks due to circumstances that were completely outside of our control—and outside of Taylor’s Nursery’s control as well. Although we did not purchase the warranty, their customer service was absolutely outstanding. From my very first phone call, they acted quickly to escalate the situation, kept us updated on when their next shipment of palm trees would be arriving, and even called us personally to let us know the shipment had come in so we could choose the right replacement. To make the experience even better, they came out and installed our new palm the very same day! They truly went above and beyond our expectations. It’s rare to find a business that cares so much about its customers and making sure they “make it right”, even when they aren’t obligated to. We are incredibly grateful for their kindness, professionalism, and exceptional service, and we’re so glad we chose to purchase our palm from Taylor’s Nursery. We highly recommend them! ⭐️⭐️💯

Most beautiful plants, meticulously laid out, clean and one of the best nurseries I have visited! I used to have an arborist husband who bought all of his trees and shrubs from Green Goods. He would try to stop me from going with him because I would always add on a ton of plants for me personally haha However, they are wholesale only :-(I unfortunately don't have connections to go pick out plants but if I did? I would be tickled!!

WORTH THE TRIP As an Architect/Interior Designer, I am often asked to assist my clients with houseplants/outdoor plants and this has become a part of my services to them. I recently visited The Greenery Garden Centre Gift & Home on Hilton Head Island with clients, shopping for houseplants, garden implements, and garden furniture. Everything is very well organised and spotlessly clean; it was wonderful to see so many flowers and green plants alive and thriving in the midst of winter! There are several sections of outdoor perennials as well as annuals, and many of the flowers are grouped in decorative baskets for gifts, etc. They are in beautiful condition and my clients and I had several discussions on where they might be placed. Pricing appears to be quite fair in comparison to northern Illinois; I did not observe anything too 'cheap' or otherwise. There are several sheds throughout the area with pots, planters, and larger outdoor items; I was very glad to see quite a range of different styles, colours, shapes, and sizes available for purchase. I did not purchase anything requiring delivery, and thus cannot comment on this. It is my understanding that delivery/installation services are either available or that such labour can be recommended. There are also two (2) small boutiques with gift items, many of which were very 'fun' and quite charming; as Easter is approaching I observed some very novel decorations and household items which my clients appreciated. There is also a good range of garden furniture and decorative objects, including trellises, pergole, and the like. These stimulated some further discussion with my clients for the gardens at their house. Overall, I very much enjoyed my visit to The Greenery and find it to have been worthwhile. WORTH THE TRIP

This charming garden shop and nursery is housed in what appears to be an historic Bluffton Old Town building, but I learned that it was actually constructed in this century. Regardless of it’s actually age, it has an old world charm about it. The interior of the shop is adorned with lots of garden-themed and seasonal merchandise. Today, it sported loads of bunnies and other spring and Easter decor. Outside in the courtyard, surrounded by live oaks laden with Spanish moss, there are oodles of urns and pots of different sizes, shape and constitution. They seem to be home to a small colony of skinks and geckos, which only added to their intrigue. They had a small selection of petite succulents and some other plants and small trees, as well, to offer in additional to the pottery. The shop ladies were personable, and I quite enjoyed my visit.
