Buying Guide for TN Gardeners

  • Check for Local Acclimation: Tennessee soil can vary from heavy clay to rocky loam. Always ask if a plant was grown in the region, as locally raised plants are far more likely to tolerate the specific humidity and temperature swings of the Upper Cumberland.
  • Evaluate Plant Health: Inspect foliage for signs of pests or nutrient deficiencies. Check roots; if they are circling the edge of the pot, the plant is pot-bound and may struggle to establish in the ground.
  • Understand Hardiness Zones: Cookeville resides in Zone 7. When selecting trees or shrubs, ensure the label confirms Zone 7 suitability to avoid winter kill or summer heat stress.
  • Prioritize Native Species: Many local nurseries offer native perennials. These plants require less supplemental watering, fewer fertilizers, and support local pollinators better than exotic cultivars.
  • The Garden Center Advantage: Unlike big-box stores, independent garden centers provide specific planting advice, pest management solutions, and professional guidance on soil amendments suited to our local earth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time to plant trees in Cookeville?

A: In Tennessee, the best time to plant trees is during the dormant season, which typically runs from late fall to early spring. Planting in late autumn allows root systems to establish while the ground remains workable before the intense heat of summer, leading to stronger growth in the first year.

Q: Why should I buy plants from a local nursery instead of a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries offer plants acclimated to the specific microclimates of the Upper Cumberland. Their staff provides expert guidance on local soil types and pest issues, and their inventory is usually curated to thrive in Tennessee's climate, whereas big-box store inventory is often sourced from regions with vastly different growing conditions.

Q: How do I amend Cookeville soil for better gardening?

A: Much of the region features heavy clay content. To improve drainage and aeration, mix in organic matter like compost, leaf mold, or aged pine bark to a depth of at least six inches. Testing your soil pH is also recommended, as many Tennessee soils are naturally acidic.

Q: What is the difference between a wholesale nursery and a garden center?

A: A wholesale nursery typically sells in high volume to licensed professionals, landscapers, and retailers, often requiring a business license for purchase. A garden center is a retail-focused establishment that sells individual plants, soil, tools, and hardscaping supplies directly to the general public for home projects.

Q: Are native Tennessee plants easier to maintain?

A: Yes, native plants have adapted to Tennessee's specific climate, rainfall, and soil conditions over thousands of years. Once established, they generally require significantly less irrigation, fertilization, and pest control compared to non-native or exotic plant species, making them an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardening.

Got a paperbark maple which was shipped in the fall and I'm not sure what happened but a scratch test 3 weeks after planting in the ground revealed just a little green. I contacted the nursery and I was told that if it doesn't wake up in Spring they will replace it. Sure enough that happened and they are shipping a new tree. I like doing business with companies that back their products. Too many nurseries take advantage of people that are just beginning their gardening journey

I was looking for a nursery in the area with large established trees. I called around to a variety of places in Smithville and McMinville. I felt like I was being treated as an annoyance with many of these places. Some didn’t answer, some were short and said they couldn’t help, and some told me they couldn’t even sell to me since I don’t own a landscaping business. When I called Boyd & Boyd, I had exactly the opposite experience! From the front desk staff to the guys in the yard, I was treated excellently at this nursery! George helped me look around at the different varieties of trees they had. I was shocked at how large and healthy their trees are, and I am certain that within a year or two in the ground they will be awesome for my family. When I had chosen the trees I wanted, five guys came to help load the trees onto my trailer and perfectly tie a tarp over all of them so that the wind wouldn’t damage them on my drive. The prices were VERY reasonable! I will be going back to Boyd & Boyd Nursery very soon and definitely have found my new favorite place to shop for plants. Thanks guys!
