Dirt Bag

I rarely leave negative reviews for small businesses because I know how much they impact them, but my experience here has been incredibly disappointing. I ordered 7 plants on April 21st. Five were ready for pickup on April 30th, but the remaining two were backordered. The owner kindly offered to ship them for free when they arrived on May 21st. Because I was moving that weekend and was also going out of town, I replied the same day asking to pick them up in-store on May 28th instead. However, when I arrived on the 28th, my plants were nowhere to be found. It took days of trying to reach the owner to finally find out on June 5th that they had accidentally put my paid-for plants back on the sales floor and sold them. Instead of offering to reorder them, I was simply issued a refund and a $10 promo code. To make matters worse, the 5 plants I did receive (which were repotted in the shop's soil) are now almost completely dead due to a massive spider mite infestation. I brought these plants directly to my office, where there are absolutely no other plants, so the infestation definitely originated from this shop—either from the soil or the plants themselves. I have spent weeks trying to control it with multiple bottles of neem oil and insecticidal soap, but the plants are now barely alive and the infestation is uncontrollable. I was so excited to support this local shop, but after losing the first two plants to poor organization and the other five to pests, I cannot recommend them.

A few months ago, I specifically came to this shop because a friend shared a photo of a heart hoya she got from here, which I've been obsessed with ever since I found one thriving outdoors on a trip overseas. I was thrilled to find one in Houston, and even showed a friendly staff member a photo of the mature plant I saw. I asked if he had any care tips to achieve a similar result. He told me that heart hoyas can take years to sprout extra leaves, and not to get my hopes up. Only since purchasing this plant and doing my own research did I learn that there's a huge difference between a mother hoya plant and a single leaf plant (which is what I purchased at the store). Mainly, most single leaf hoyas lack the node necessary to propagate new leaves, and the ones that manage do indeed take years to achieve this. After checking, it doesn't look like the plant I got from Dirt Bag has a growth node. Even so, the staff member could have given me the heads up that if I was hoping to achieve a result like the example I showed him, I would need to purchase a different sort of plant, that the shop did not seem to have. In the best case, he was very confidently wrong and in the worst case, he mislead me to sell a plant. Only reason I'm not rating lower is because a few weeks later a few box stores also sold single heart hoyas, and at the very least the pricing seemed fair for going market value.

I came looking for marantas and I found 4 different ones. They wrapped them well and they even gave me a Dirt Bag sticker. The store isn’t name after the song FYI
