Buying Guide for WA Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Species: Choosing Pacific Northwest natives, such as those found at Hima Nursery, ensures plants are already adapted to local precipitation patterns. These species offer superior resilience against local pests and require significantly fewer chemical inputs.
  • Check Plant Health: Before purchase, inspect root systems for signs of being 'pot-bound,' look for dark or mushy roots, and check leaf undersides for signs of aphids or mites. A healthy plant should show vigorous new growth, not just existing foliage.
  • Seasonal Timing: In Washington, autumn is the optimal window for planting trees and shrubs. The cooling soil temperatures and expected fall rains allow root systems to establish before the stress of summer heat arrives.
  • Acclimation Advantage: Buying from local growers like Snohomish Garden Center or McAuliffe's ensures that the plants are raised in a climate similar to your garden. Avoid big-box store plants sourced from distant greenhouses, as these often face higher transplant shock when introduced to the variable weather of Silver Firs.
  • Soil Prep: Washington's soil can vary between heavy clay and nutrient-poor glacial till. Consult with your local garden center about specific soil amendments like compost or mineral additives before planting to ensure drainage and nutrient retention.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time of year to plant trees in Silver Firs?

A: The ideal window for planting trees in the Pacific Northwest is during the dormant season, specifically autumn or early spring. Planting in autumn allows root systems to establish in cooling, moist soil before the summer heat. Spring planting is a secondary option, provided you maintain consistent irrigation as the weather warms, as this ensures the plant can withstand the dry summer months.

Q: Why should I choose native plants over non-native ornamentals?

A: Native plants are evolutionarily adapted to Washington's specific climate and soil conditions. Once established, they require significantly less water, fewer fertilizers, and minimal pesticide use compared to non-native ornamental plants. Additionally, they provide essential food and habitat for local pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects, contributing to a healthier, more sustainable garden ecosystem in the Snohomish region.

Q: What is the difference between a retail garden center and a wholesale nursery?

A: Retail garden centers are designed for the general public, offering smaller quantities, consumer-friendly displays, and knowledgeable staff available for home gardening advice. Wholesale nurseries generally cater to professional landscapers and developers, focusing on large-scale plant production, volume pricing, and contract-grown material. While some nurseries offer both, it is important to verify if a site is open to the public before visiting.

Q: How do I amend local soil for better plant growth?

A: Washington soils often lean toward acidic or heavy clay compositions. For most garden beds, adding organic matter—such as high-quality compost or aged manure—is the most effective way to improve structure and nutrient availability. For acid-loving plants like rhododendrons, monitor pH levels closely and consider incorporating amendments that support specific moisture retention needs.

Q: How can I tell if a nursery plant is healthy?

A: Inspect the plant for vibrant foliage and uniform growth. Ensure the soil is not overly dry or waterlogged. Gently lift the plant from its container; the roots should be white or light-colored and fill the pot without forming tight, circling mats, which indicate the plant has been sitting in the container too long and may struggle once planted.

Such a cute nursery! I always come out of that store with something! I would like to see their dirt bags be compostable. When I was filling my raised garden beds, the plastic pieces just kept shedding right off. It was really challenging to keep that to a minimum.

Am a happy repeat customer of Greening America and pleased once again with the great work they do. They were able to replace much of my lawn and improve the drainage just before the rainy season. They work hard and efficiently with care and attention to detail, and the finished work is outstanding at a very reasonable price. Jerry, the long-time owner runs his business well and does what is best for the customer with thorough planning, coordination, and communication. Have seen their work elsewhere for commercial and residential, including a previous neighbor to whom I recommended their service and can only say if you want great landscaping/irrigation done right and affordably, go with Greening America.
