I wanted to like Signal Mountain Nursery. The facility is beautiful, the plant selection is excellent, and they proudly promote that much of their inventory is grown locally on Signal Mountain. As a landscaping contractor, I was hoping to build a long-term relationship with a local nursery that stood behind its products and valued repeat business. Unfortunately, my experience with their warranty process and customer service has been the exact opposite. In September 2025, I purchased 43 plants from Signal Mountain Nursery for a landscaping project. The receipt included their plant guarantee and stated that if a tree or shrub failed within the first year, the customer would receive a 50% credit toward a replacement plant. Less than a year later, I returned with 9 dead plants, the plants themselves, and my receipt, expecting to follow the warranty process described on the receipt. Instead, I was told by multiple employees, including Courtney, that plants purchased under contractor/wholesale pricing are not covered by the warranty. My issue is not the policy itself. My issue is that it was never clearly communicated when I opened my account or made the purchase. The original wholesale account application I completed contained no language stating that wholesale purchases were excluded from warranty coverage. During my conversations with management, I was eventually sent an updated wholesale application that now specifically states wholesale purchases are not eligible for warranty coverage and are sold as-is. Had that been clearly disclosed from the beginning, there would have been no misunderstanding. What made this experience particularly frustrating was the way it was handled. Rather than acknowledging the lack of clarity, I was repeatedly met with responses such as, “that’s our policy,” “we assume people know that,” and “we can’t do that because it wouldn’t be in our best interest as a business.” I was made to feel unreasonable for relying on the warranty language printed on the receipt and attempting to follow the process as written. I also spent several days trying to speak with an owner or manager, only to get the runaround. When I finally spoke with Jen, the focus was not on resolving the issue, retaining a contractor customer, or finding a reasonable compromise. The focus was simply defending the policy. What made this even more frustrating was learning during that conversation that $799.96 worth of plants on my order had not received the wholesale discount they should have received. Yet even after identifying an apparent mistake on their end, there was still no effort to take ownership of the situation or work toward any resolution. The disappointing part is not that plants died. Anyone in landscaping knows plants sometimes fail despite proper planting and maintenance. The disappointing part is the complete lack of accountability and customer service when issues arose. At every step, I was met with excuses, deflection, and rigid policy enforcement rather than any attempt to address a legitimate concern. Signal Mountain Nursery sells beautiful plants and operates a beautiful facility. Unfortunately, my experience showed me that when there is a problem, customer retention, accountability, and goodwill take a back seat to protecting profit margins and enforcing policies that were never clearly disclosed in the first place. Unless ownership is willing to address how this situation was handled, I will not spend another dollar at Signal Mountain Nursery, nor will I recommend it for future landscape projects. Contractors should make sure they receive every warranty limitation in writing and should not rely solely on the guarantee language printed on the receipt.
