Buying Guide for TN Gardeners

  • Climate Matching: Middle Tennessee falls generally within USDA Hardiness Zones 7a/7b. Always verify that woody plants are rated for these specific zones to survive winter temperature drops.
  • Native Species: Prioritize native Tennessee plants such as Purple Coneflower (Echinacea) or native Dogwoods. They require less supplemental irrigation once established and support local pollinators better than exotic cultivars.
  • Soil Health: Tennessee soil often features high clay content. Visit local suppliers like Patterson's Garden Co. to source high-quality compost or organic amendments before installing new landscape beds to improve drainage.
  • Inspection: Before purchasing, inspect container plants for root circling. If roots have filled the pot entirely, the plant may struggle to adapt to the ground. Healthy roots should be white or light tan, not brown or mushy.
  • Timing: Fall is often the best time for planting trees and shrubs in Tennessee. The cooler air temperature combined with warm soil allows root systems to establish before the stress of the summer heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time of year to plant trees in Murfreesboro?

A: The ideal planting window in Middle Tennessee is late autumn, typically October through November. Planting during this period allows root systems to establish in the warm soil before the ground freezes, while the cooler air minimizes moisture loss through the foliage. Spring planting is also an option, but it requires more consistent supplemental watering as the summer heat approaches.

Q: Why should I buy plants from a local nursery instead of a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries in Murfreesboro often grow their own stock or source it from regional growers, meaning the plants are already acclimated to the Tennessee climate. Big-box stores frequently ship plants from different geographic regions that may not be hardened to local humidity, temperature shifts, or soil types, leading to higher failure rates after installation.

Q: How do I improve Tennessee's clay-heavy soil?

A: To improve clay-heavy soil, incorporate significant amounts of organic matter, such as compost or well-aged manure, into your garden beds. This improves drainage and root aeration. Avoid using sand, as it can worsen the soil structure when mixed with clay. Local garden centers often carry bulk soil blends specifically formulated for Middle Tennessee landscapes.

Q: Are native plants better for my Tennessee garden?

A: Yes, native plants are evolved to thrive in Tennessee's climate and soil conditions, which makes them highly drought-tolerant and less prone to local pests. By choosing native species, you reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides, ultimately creating a more sustainable and low-maintenance landscape that supports local bird and pollinator populations.

Q: What is the difference between a nursery and a garden center?

A: A nursery typically focuses on the cultivation and production of plants from seeds or cuttings. A garden center, while it may grow some stock, functions primarily as a retail destination. Many businesses in Murfreesboro, such as Martin's Home & Garden, operate as a hybrid, offering both professional-grade nursery stock and a wide array of retail gardening tools.

Martin’s Home & Garden honestly felt like the Disney World of garden places! I have been wanting to go for a while, and I finally made it over there. It was absolutely wonderful. They had so much variety, everything was beautiful, and the people were so sweet and helpful. They also had a really good sale going on, which was dangerous for someone like me who keeps saying I do not need any more plants. Clearly, that was a lie. I honestly don’t think I’ll be running to the big garden stores like that anymore. I would much rather bring my love of gardening here and support a place that feels local, welcoming, and full of life. Such a great experience!

I recently was in Manchester for bonaroo and heard McMinnville was the nursery capital of the world. This was very exciting for me as I love landscaping and gardening! I went to many different nurseries, but this one was by far the best experience! There was a certain tree I wanted and it was much more expensive for smaller specimens elsewhere. I asked them to hold it until i could return the following weekend with a truck, and they did! Everyone I encountered while there was exceptional. They loaded and wrapped my tree and then unwrapped it and fixed everything after I added 2 more. They answered all of my questions and I ended up driving away with an entire truck load for probably less than I would have gotten my single tree at other nurseries. If you only shop at one nursery in all of McMinville, this is the nursery!! I drove 3 hours to return and I would happily do it all over again! I could have not asked for a better experience!

Had the best experience at the Murfreesboro location and can't wait to get these beauties in the ground! The staff was extremely helpful and eager to look for items I asked about with no hesitation whatsoever. All I had to say was, "do you have..." and they were off to check one of their many greenhouses and quickly return with an answer. I only wish I would have asked the names of the two ladies that helped us. They were as excited about the plants as I was and it was clear that they really enjoy working at Southbranch and helping people create beautiful landscapes. The selection was great, the plants are top-notch healthy, and the prices were good. I would highly recommend them for your landscape and garden plans!
