Buying Guide for TX Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Plants: Species native to the Texas Hill Country, such as Texas Sage or Flame Acanthus, require significantly less water and are naturally resistant to common regional pests.
  • Check Root Systems: When purchasing from any garden center, gently check for root-bound plants. Healthy roots should look firm and light-colored rather than dark, mushy, or circling the container edge.
  • Understand USDA Hardiness: The region typically falls into Zone 8, meaning sudden hard freezes are possible. Always verify that woody shrubs and trees are rated for your specific elevation and microclimate.
  • Soil Amendments: Because local soil is often thin and alkaline, invest in high-quality compost or specialized soil mixes from your nursery to improve drainage and nutrient availability before planting.
  • Seasonal Timing: Fall is generally the best time to plant trees and shrubs in Texas. This allows roots to establish during the mild winter months before the intense stress of the summer heat begins.
  • Shop Local Growers: Plants grown in local nurseries are already acclimated to Texas humidity and temperature fluctuations. This reduces the 'transplant shock' commonly associated with plants shipped from cooler, northern greenhouses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I buy plants from a local nursery instead of a big-box store in Kerrville?

A: Local nurseries stock varieties specifically chosen for the Hill Country's alkaline soil and climate. Unlike big-box retailers, which often ship plants from distant, non-arid regions, local growers offer species already acclimated to the Texas sun and seasonal shifts. This local history results in significantly higher survival rates and better overall plant health for your backyard landscape.

Q: What is the best time of year to start a garden in the Texas Hill Country?

A: For trees and shrubs, autumn is the ideal planting season in Texas. The cooling temperatures and typically moderate rainfall help roots establish before the summer heat. For vegetable gardens, follow the regional planting calendar, which typically includes two main windows: early spring for warm-season crops like tomatoes and peppers, and late summer for cool-season crops like kale, lettuce, and broccoli.

Q: How do I deal with the rocky, alkaline soil found in Kerrville?

A: Most of the region sits on limestone bedrock with high pH levels. Before planting, it is wise to add organic compost or specialized soil mixes purchased from your garden center. These amendments improve soil structure and nutrient availability. For particularly tough areas, consider xeriscaping with native cacti and succulents that thrive in shallow, rocky, and well-draining substrate.

Q: What is the difference between a garden center and a wholesale nursery?

A: A garden center is a retail-focused business designed for homeowners, offering curated plant selections, soil, fertilizers, and design advice in a welcoming environment. A wholesale nursery primarily serves landscape professionals and contractors, focusing on bulk quantities, container-grown trees, and high-volume shrubs. While some businesses like those in Kerrville operate as both, understanding their primary model helps you know what level of service to expect.

Q: Do native plants really require less maintenance in Texas?

A: Yes. Native species have evolved over thousands of years to handle the Hill Country's unique stressors, including periodic droughts and intense heat. Once established, these plants typically require far less supplemental irrigation and fewer fertilizers or pesticides compared to non-native or ornamental varieties. Choosing natives promotes regional biodiversity and supports local pollinators, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that is much easier to manage.

I want to express our pleasure with how nice our backyard looks now that Gardens at the Ridge has finished the job. Billy and Lindsey came out and spent time listening to my desire for a low water/all natives design. Their suggested plants are exactly what I was looking for in both color and placement. The butterflies, bees and birds will be most happy in the coming years. Michael led Coy and David implementing the design spending several weeks of digging, leveling, rock moving, and planting while dealing with our pup, Ella. The entire team was very attentive to my questions and concerns. I highly recommend Gardens at the Ridge for anyone considering a yard makeover.
