Buying Guide for NJ Gardeners

  • Climate Calibration: Always select plants marked for zones 6 or 7. Local nurseries typically source stock already acclimated to the regional humidity and temperature shifts, which increases survival rates compared to big-box store items shipped from different climates.
  • Native Benefits: Prioritize native plants. Species indigenous to New Jersey require less supplemental watering, fewer fertilizers, and generally resist local pests better than exotic ornamentals.
  • Inspect Plant Health: Check foliage for signs of disease and look for healthy, white roots when slipping a plant from its pot. Avoid specimens with root-bound masses or signs of wilting.
  • Seasonal Strategy: In New Jersey, the best planting times are early spring and mid-to-late autumn. Planting during these windows allows roots to establish in cool, moist soil before the stresses of high summer temperatures arrive.
  • Soil Prep: Know your soil type. Princeton often deals with clay-heavy earth; purchase soil amendments like organic compost or locally sourced mulch from your nearby garden center to improve drainage and aeration before digging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time of year to plant trees and shrubs in Princeton?

A: In New Jersey, autumn is often superior to spring for planting woody ornamentals. Fall planting allows roots to establish in the warming ground before the intense heat of summer. If you must plant in spring, aim for the period immediately after the soil thaws but before the plant breaks dormancy to minimize transplant shock.

Q: How do I choose between a local nursery and a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries offer plants specifically suited to the New Jersey climate and often provide expert consultation on placement and care. Unlike big-box stores, which often buy generic inventory from large national distributors, independent nurseries frequently grow their own stock or source from regional growers, resulting in healthier, more resilient plants that thrive in local soil conditions.

Q: Why are native plants recommended for New Jersey gardens?

A: Native plants have evolved alongside local insects and soil microbes, requiring significantly less water, fertilizer, and chemical pesticides. By planting natives from a local garden center, you create a self-sustaining ecosystem that provides essential food and shelter for regional pollinators, which helps improve the overall biodiversity and health of your specific New Jersey landscape.

Q: How should I improve my soil before starting a new garden bed?

A: Most New Jersey soil benefits from the addition of high-quality organic matter to improve structure and drainage. Incorporate compost or well-rotted mulch, which can be sourced in bulk from local garden centers. These amendments increase nutrient availability and help your soil retain moisture during the drier periods of the New Jersey summer, leading to stronger root development.

Q: What should I look for when inspecting a nursery plant for purchase?

A: Inspect the foliage for discoloration or signs of pests, but also examine the root system. A healthy plant will have firm, white roots visible at the edge of the root ball. Avoid plants with circling, woody, or 'root-bound' masses, as these are unlikely to establish well in the ground and may suffer from stunted growth or premature mortality.

Rutgers Landscape did my patio and plantings. I was quite a large job which included a separate fire pit area and an elevated landing. Overall they did a fantastic job. I went with Rutgers because as a premium company I expected premium service; and that's exactly what I received. I had to call them back a few times for some maintenance work and they had no problem coming and making adjustments. I highly recommend them. It was a pleasure to work with Rob, Milzon, Edy, Billy, and team. They take pride in their work and the results show.

Amazing experience with Krissy & Mark. They’re a dying breed, a family owned company with fair prices, exceptional product, exceptional service, that make you feel like you’re a top priority. Krissy was phenomenal to work with leading up to the planting day, answered all my stupid questions, laid out the process & everything. Mark went above & beyond during the tree planting, helped me transplant another tree, excavated some dirt in another area for me. Just top notch. Entire process was easy & enjoyable with them. I will go out of my way to refer people to them & we’ll be back for more. My neighbors are raving about the trees & how beautiful they look. Delightful people & we couldn’t be happier with the trees!
