Buying Guide for OR Gardeners
- Check Hardiness Compatibility: Always verify if your chosen plant thrives in USDA zone 8. Oregonβs wet winters and dry summers require plants with strong root systems.
- Prioritize Acclimated Stock: Plants grown in local nurseries are already adjusted to the Willamette Valleyβs soil and rainfall patterns, drastically increasing their survival rate compared to big-box store imports.
- Inspect for Health: Look for firm, healthy roots and foliage free of signs of pests. Avoid plants that are root-bound in small containers, as they will struggle to establish in the landscape.
- Seasonal Timing: Fall is the optimal time for planting woody shrubs and trees in Oregon, as the soil remains warm while the increased autumn rainfall encourages root development before the summer drought.
- Evaluate the Nursery Model: Use specialized nurseries for unique plant needs, such as shade plants or native species, and rely on general garden centers for routine mulch, soil amendments, and seasonal bedding plants.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the best time of year to plant in Salem, Oregon?
A: Fall is generally the best time to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials in the Willamette Valley. Planting in early autumn allows root systems to establish while the soil is still warm and the rains have returned, ensuring the plants are well-prepared to survive the following summer's dry period.
Q: Why should I choose a local nursery over a big-box store?
A: Local nurseries offer plants that are grown in the region, meaning they are already adapted to local soil types and climate stressors. Big-box retailers often ship inventory from different climate zones, which may require more water, fertilizer, and pest control to survive in Oregon's specific environment.
Q: What is the difference between a garden center and a nursery?
A: A nursery typically focuses on the cultivation and propagation of plants, often specializing in specific species. A garden center is usually a retail-focused business that sources plants from various growers and supplies a broader range of tools, soils, amendments, and hardscaping materials for the average homeowner.
Q: How do I amend Salem's soil for best planting results?
A: Salem soil can be heavy in clay or silt. To improve drainage and aeration, incorporate well-composted organic matter like yard debris compost or aged manure. Testing your soil pH before planting is also recommended, as many native Pacific Northwest plants prefer slightly acidic conditions.
Q: Are native plants a good choice for my garden?
A: Yes, native plants are excellent choices because they are naturally resistant to local pests and diseases and generally require less supplemental irrigation once established. They also provide essential habitat for local pollinators, such as native bees and butterflies, which are critical to the health of the Willamette Valley ecosystem.

I bought several last year. We had NINETEEN FEET of snow last winter. They all survived, look really healthy and the blooms are lovely!
β Schreiner's GardensLove this nursery! I have visited at least once a year for the past three years. The gardens are lovely and always changing with new growth and blooms. It's worth the drive! As everyone says, the hosta selection cannot be beat and the prices are fair. There's is a large selection of Epimediums ranging from deciduous to evergreen. The fern and astilbe selections are plentiful. There's so much to admire for a shady garden including coral bells (heurcheras) and Tiarellas. There's also great plants for sun including irises, lilies, alliums, and agapanthus. Dieramma pulchereimun (wand flower) were blooming last week (late June) and they are spectacular. Lastly, it's worth visiting the Sebrights and peafowl. The roosters will put in a show, or at least announce themselve. Recently, we saw a peahen with three chicks.
