Buying Guide for AZ Gardeners

  • Prioritize Native Species: Look for plants labeled as desert-adapted or native. These require significantly less supplemental irrigation once established and tolerate the high-intensity Phoenix summer.
  • Check Plant Acclimation: Purchasing from local growers who farm in Arizona prevents transplant shock. Plants grown in high-humidity, cooler climates often struggle when moved directly into the Phoenix heat.
  • Inspect Root Systems: Before buying, gently lift the plant from its pot. Look for healthy, white roots. Avoid plants that are root-bound or show signs of circling in the container.
  • Understand Planting Windows: Avoid planting delicate species during the peak heat of June through August. The best planting seasons in Phoenix are autumn (September to November) and early spring (February to April).
  • Soil Amendments: Phoenix soil is often heavy clay or caliche. Ask your local nursery for recommendations on organic compost or gypsum to improve drainage and nutrient absorption before installing new landscape material.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When is the best time to plant in Phoenix?

A: The ideal planting windows are fall (September through November) and early spring (February through April). These periods allow root systems to establish in milder temperatures before the extreme heat of summer or the rare freezing nights of winter stress the plants.

Q: Why buy from a local nursery instead of a big-box store?

A: Local nurseries stock plants specifically grown for Arizona's unique desert climate. Big-box retailers often ship inventory from cooler, more humid regions, leading to high failure rates. Local nurseries also provide specific expert guidance on microclimates and regional pests.

Q: How do I manage clay and caliche soil in my garden?

A: Phoenix soil is notoriously dense. Before planting, incorporate organic compost or aged manure to improve drainage. If you encounter caliche, a hardened layer of calcium carbonate, you must break it up or plant in raised beds to ensure proper root penetration and water movement.

Q: What are the benefits of xeriscaping in the desert?

A: Xeriscaping reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental irrigation by utilizing drought-tolerant, native plants. This approach significantly lowers water bills and maintenance labor, while also preventing soil erosion and supporting local pollinators adapted to the arid Sonoran environment.

Q: What is the difference between a garden center and a wholesale nursery?

A: A garden center is primarily retail-focused, catering to homeowners with smaller quantities, tools, and advice. A wholesale nursery typically deals in bulk quantities for professional landscapers and commercial contractors, though many Arizona establishments, like Elgin Nursery, operate as hybrids to serve both audiences.

One of the best nurseries in town. What makes this Nursery Stand Out is actual reasonable prices, you can get a big expensive cacti or you can go get smaller guys that are about a foot tall for like 12 to 8 bucks. Instead of going to a tree and only getting one for like 50 bucks you get a bunch of different dope specimens. The guy that works there is really nice and you can tell that he loves cacti too

I’ve been here with my family probably a dozen times over the last seven or so months. Most recently, it was because that’s what my toddler wanted to do on his 3rd birthday. Specifically, he wanted to see Mr. Robert, feed the fish, and visit “Hi Guy” the parrot. The kid LOVES this place and if he’s not asking to go to Green Goddess, he’s making up stories about Green Goddess (like the one time he and his friends had a party and they went to Green Goddess nursery and the zoo). I mention the above because if a plant nursery is making that kind of impression on a boy who wasn’t even 2 1/2 the first time he visited, that seems really special. All the staff have been incredible, especially when they have seen us there multiple days in a row. Robert deserves a special shout out, though. He has never failed to take a moment out of his day to speak with my son, me, and/or my in-laws. He is so warm and friendly that my usually-shy son asks for him by name and wants to look for Mr. Robert as soon as we arrive. If we’re purchasing something bigger or heavier that day, Robert always provides help himself or ensures someone is available to assist us out to the car. As a final note, it has been an absolute pleasure to witness the change in some of the birds since we started visiting Green Goddess. My son has a favorite parrot and he (or she) seemed to be speaking more when we were there last. He came down to the front of the cage to visit up close with my son and did several playful head bobs and head tilts. We’ve also seen birds regrow their plucked feathers over the course of time.

I am throughly pleased with the (2) 15’ palms I purchased for my client. These are the nicest palm trees I have planted in my 25 years as a landscape contractor. The crew did an amazing job from the dig to the cleaning up after the planting as well. Extremely professional and responsive company. To top it off they used Smiley Crane for the planting. Smileys has always been my go to for crane work. Another great company to work with!

This place is a treasure and I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Tens of thousands of plants, including an indoor warehouse, all lovingly cared for along with painted pottery and gardening essentials. I go on weekday mornings and the staff are attentive and helpful. I can and do spend hours just wondering, looking at all the flowers and greenery. A true gem for gardeners and plant lovers!
