Buying Guide for OR Gardeners

  • Climate Matching: Prioritize plants labeled as Pacific Northwest native or drought-tolerant. These varieties are pre-acclimated to the region's specific precipitation cycles, reducing the need for intensive irrigation during summer.
  • Inspection Checklist: When visiting a garden center, always inspect the underside of leaves for pests, look for firm root systems, and check for signs of transplant shock like wilting or yellowing foliage.
  • Buying Local: Purchasing from nurseries that propagate stock on-site ensures your plants are not only adapted to local soil conditions but have not been subjected to the high stress of long-distance shipping.
  • Seasonal Timing: In Oregon, fall is often the best time to plant trees and shrubs. The soil remains warm, and the return of winter rain helps establish root systems before the next summer heat wave.
  • Soil Prep: Portland soils can be heavy with clay. Incorporate high-quality compost or organic matter provided by your local garden center to improve drainage and nutrient profile before planting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the best time of year to plant in Portland?

A: The ideal planting time for most trees, shrubs, and perennials in Oregon is during the fall. Mild temperatures and the return of autumn rains allow plants to establish strong root systems before the dry summer heat arrives.

Q: Should I choose a garden center or a big-box store?

A: Local garden centers offer superior plant health, climate-specific varieties, and expert advice. Unlike big-box retailers, independent nurseries in Portland often carry regionally grown stock that is better suited to local soil types and microclimates, leading to higher success rates in your home landscape.

Q: How do I handle Portland's heavy clay soil?

A: Improve heavy clay soil by incorporating generous amounts of organic matter, such as compost or aged mulch, into your planting holes. This helps break up the soil structure, improves drainage, and provides essential nutrients that local plants need for vigorous growth.

Q: Are native plants better than ornamental varieties?

A: Native plants are evolutionarily adapted to the Pacific Northwest. They require less supplemental water, are naturally resistant to local pests, and provide critical habitat for local pollinators, making them a lower-maintenance choice for sustainable gardening compared to exotic ornamental species.

Q: What is the primary difference between a nursery and a garden center?

A: Nurseries typically focus on the propagation and growth of plants, offering a deep selection of specific botanicals. Garden centers often function as retail hubs, combining a wide variety of plant stock with hardscape materials, tools, pots, and fertilizers to support the entire gardening process.

I absolutely love Arium. Every worker I've interacted with has been above and beyond kind. Aside from their great assortment of plants, they offer the best advice! All it took was a conversation with them to take my poor struggling plant from withering to flourish. I couldn't recommend them more whether you're buying into or rehabing your plant family
